History[edit]

Brewhouse & Kitchen is the brain child of co-founders Kris Gumbrell (CEO) and Simon Bunn (Managing Director). In 2013, they opened their first brewpub in Portsmouth. Taking over from an old Weatherspoon’s, the pub was transformed into the recognisable décor and microbrewery we know today and the décor’s becoming more and more interesting with the introduction of Beach Huts in their beer garden in Bournemouth and Tap Tables in Nottingham!

2014 saw the opening of their second brewpub in Dorchester and it’s been a steady stream of openings since then. In 2016, B&K saw a 50% growth in one year and continues its rapid incline today.

The brewpubs aren’t the only things that’s grown. B&K Head Office has gone from a starting number of 3 in 2013 to an impressive 17 and growing in 2017. The new office renovation occurred in June 2017 and now expanses the majority of the top of B&K in Highbury. The office ethos is fun and sociable with a Brewball each year for the entire company (including General Managers).

In January 2017, Brewhouse & Kitchen hired David Maxwell Scott as Non-Exec Chairman of the company replacing ex- Exec Chairman Kris Gumbrell who moved into the role of CEO.

The Concept[edit]

Brewpubs are a popular concept in the USA but they’re just starting to develop a strong hold in the UK. A brewpub is defined by its ability to sell beer brewed on the premises (Collins English Dictionary). In simple terms, a brewpub is a pub with a working brewery on the premises, in Brewhouse & Kitchen’s case, they have working microbreweries Microbrewery#Brewpub in all 17 brewpubs.
