Brian Chavez

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Brian Chavez was a member of the Permian Panther's football team in Odessa, Texas. Chavez was depicted in the book Friday Night Lights as the brainy tight end, defensive linebacker, and team captain of the Panthers. Brian is depicted as being "diamond in the rough" in Odessa and having a bright future ahead of him. Brian was notoriously intelligent, athletic, and strong. Brian would graduate valedictorian of his class after being a part of the Panther's famed 1988 season. Brian was served as team captain, tight end, and defensive linebacker for the Permian Panthers. Before a playoff game during his junior year, Chavez injured his ankle to the point he believed it to be broken. He avoided going to the doctor, realizing it would mean getting him pulled from the game. To ameliorate the pain, he played through the game on pain killers. Upon going to the doctor after the game, he was informed he had in fact broken his ankle.[1] When the Harvard admissions team reached out to the Permian Panthers’s coaching staff for film of Chavez playing, the Panther’s coaching staff sent footage of one of Chavez’s worst games of the season. This came to light when Chavez’s father got a call from admissions, as they couldn’t detect which player Chavez was based off the mediocre film footage. Although Chavez still had a perfect math score on the SAT and graduated at the top of the class, this incited real fear in Chavez and his family that he would not be accepted to study at Harvard.[2] Chavez would have a brief football career at Harvard, but quit during his freshman year. Chavez would later confess that the small crowds summoned by the Harvard freshman team didn't compare to those he played in front of with the Panthers. [3]

Today, Brian Chavez is a practicing lawyer in Odessa Texas. Brian's father, Tony Chavez, was also a lawyer. Brian earned his law degree from Texas Tech after graduating with his bachelors with Cum Laude honors from Harvard University. Chavez was the second person from Odessa Texas to attend Harvard.[4]

On an evening in late 2009 on East 36th Street in Odessa, Texas, Chavez, along with others, would enter the residence of Jaime and Tammie Castillo, and beat the occupants with “fixtures and statues” inside the home. Chavez would be arrested on burglary and assault charges along with three of those accompanying him. He had broken into the home and assaulted the ex-husband of his then-girlfriend Rosemary Soto after the ex-couple were arguing on the phone as to who would take care of their children of the weekend..[5]

Following the incident, Jimenez and his friends would sue Chavez in a civil court. After a $360,000 settlement, Jiminez signed off an agreement that he would not pursue criminal charges of Chavez. Chavez got off for a while with no further punishment until state prosecutors picked up the case. Wesley Mau, a prosecutor from the state attorney general’s office pursued Chavez on felony charges. Chavez faced twenty years prison, but took a deal which offered 340 hours community service, five years probation and a $10,000 fine. Chavez would be disbarred until 2015, and would start a trucking company and invest in real estate and trucking in the meantime. Fortunately, Texas had a famous oil boom at this time, and Chavez would make off well financially.[6]
