CMG Worldwide is an Indiana company that represents the intellectual property rights of various entities, and represents the estates of deceased public figures.

History[edit]

The CEO and founder of CMG is Mark Roesler. The company represents the estates of deceased public figures, arranging merchandising deals for their images, maintaining official websites for them, and maintaining current fan clubs for them.[1] CMG is based in Indianapolis, Indiana, and originated by advocating for postmortem image rights for deceased public figures. The idea originated with Roesler working as a lawyer on the protection of the artwork of the late Norman Rockwell, and then the estate of Elvis Presley.[2] Roesler founded CMG in 1982, following this work.[3] CMG’s third client was James Dean in 1983, the family of whom had not previously been receiving compensation for the commercial use of Dean’s image.[1]

As of 2005 the company represented the estates of about 250 deceased public figures.[4] In addition to commercial rights, the company has arranged around two hundred appearances of the estates they represent on US postage stamps.[1] The headquarters of CMG also has a small museum in its building containing the belongings of some of the figures it represents.[5]

Client estates represented by CMG through its history have included Humphrey Bogart, Jackie Robinson, Princess Diana,[3] John Belushi, Jack Dempsey, Malcolm X, Jessie Owens, Clark Gable, Dizzy Gillespie, Chris Farley,[1] Vince Lombardi,[6] Arthur Ashe,[7] Ingrid Bergman, James Dean, Bette Davis, Errol Flynn, Babe Ruth, Marilyn Monroe, and Mark Twain.[2] At times CMG has represented living clients, such as Lauren Bacall, Sophia Lauren, Chuck Berry, and Hugh Hefner later in their lives.[3]
