Canadian Operational Research Society

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Canadian Operational Research Society (CORS), a.k.a. Société canadienne de recherche opérationnelle (SCRO), is the leading Canadian professional society for operational researchers. It was founded in 1958[1] by three of the operational research (OR) groups in Canada at the time: Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa. The first president of CORS, and one of the catalysts behind the formation of CORS, was Dr. Omond Solandt.

Overview[edit]

CORS is a self-governing, member-based professional society with the objective to advance the theory and practice of operational research in Canada. CORS is a member of the International Federation of Operational Research Societies (IFORS) [2]. Membership is open to everyone. In addition to regular members, CORS members may choose to join special interest groups, local sections, or student chapters. The society holds at least one annual conference, in late May or early June, and special interest groups and local sections hold events/meetings at their discretion.

Governance[edit]

Guided by its constitution and bylaws, CORS is governed by a council that includes a president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, immediate past-president, and four council members. In addition to the CORS Council, standing and ad-hoc committees contribute to education, public relations, special interest groups, society sections, sister societies, and managing CORS awards.[3]

Membership[edit]

CORS members are individuals interested in operational research who work in the private or public sector in the areas of finance, transportation, the military, health care, telecommunications, the government, consulting, and academia. CORS membership includes a significant student population, working towards undergraduate or post graduate degrees in various business, computer science, engineering, management, and mathematics programs across the country.[3]

Benefits of membership include subscriptions to INFOR and the CORS Bulletin, access to the membership directory, networking opportunities, membership in a local section and in special interest groups, and funding for students to attend the annual national conference.

Journal[edit]

CORS is a sponsor of the INFOR: Information Systems and Operational Research journal (INFOR)[4]. INFOR is a quarterly journal that publishes topics in data analytics and operational research. Application, theory, review, and notes appear in the journal.

Awards[edit]

CORS recognizes a wide range of contributions to operational research through prizes, awards, and student paper competitions.

  • Harold Larnder Award for international distinction in operational research.
  • Omond Solandt Award for an organization that has made an outstanding contribution to operational research in Canada.
  • Award of Merit to a present or past member of CORS in recognition of significant contributions to the profession of operational research.
  • Service Award to members of the Society who have made outstanding contributions of time and service to the Society.
  • Practice prize to recognize the challenging application of an OR approach to the solution of applied problems.
  • Student paper awards are handed out annually in the open and undergraduate categories, and for forestry, queueing, and health care special interest groups.
