'"Carl Dane'" is an author in the Western genre who has written "Valley of the Lesser Evil" [1] and "Canyon of the Long Shadows" [2].

The books are part of a series featuring Marshal Josiah Hawke, a former philosophy professor who developed a proficiency in -- and a taste for -- fighting and killing during the American Civil War.

Audible narrator Phil Benoit, who specializes in the Western genre, wrote that a distinguishing feature of the series is that they examine moral dilemmas encountered in battle, such as use of weapons of indiscriminate destruction and torture of captives, and while they are "not philosophical treatises," they "do provide a main dish of old-fashioned fun with some serious thought for seasoning." [3]

Both works are published by Raging Bull Publishing, a house specializing in the Western novel. [4]
