Carl Haber was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in May 1956. In 1968, his family went to live in Shiraz, Iran and the experience, though lasting under a year, had a profound impact on him. After earning a BA in Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania and a graduate degree from the London International Film School, Haber moved to New York City, and began working with Maysles Films and Max Mambru Films.

Haber has directed, written, and produced feature films, documentaries and commercials in New York City, Rio de Janeiro, Vienna, Rome, Los Angeles and Prague. A member of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) since 1988, he has several new films in development with international producers.

In 1994, Haber married Romanian actress and writer Carmen Burcea.

From 2005 to 2008, Haber was faculty chair and taught direction and acting for directors at PCFE Film School in Prague, the Czech Republic. He taught courses in screenwriting, film direction and related film courses at the University of Pennsylvania, the University of the Arts and Drexel University. In 2013 he and his wife moved back to Rome, where he taught numerous film courses and served at one stage as the acting head of the film department at the American University of Rome. From January through June 2016 he served as a professor in the Film and TV Department at Savannah College of Art and Design supervising selected senior films in the Featured Films Initiative.
