Casey Baugh is an American figurative portrait artist (born in Lookout Mountain, Georgia) specializing in oil paint and charcoal. His work is described as narrative impressionistic realism.[1] He is best known for his application of dramatic and cinematic quality of lighting and attitudes for his Figurative paintings and charcoals, along with his instructional DVDs, and his unique methods of teaching in painting workshops both domestically and internationally. Baugh currently resides in Brooklyn, New York and is a member of Arcadia Contemporary.

Early Life and Education[edit]

Baugh’s earliest art instruction came at the age of four from his father and aunt who were artists by hobby. Home-schooled until 9th grade, Baugh's natural ability shined through from an early age.[2] He honed his skills by studying the works of artists such as Jean-Léon Gérôme, Alfons Maria Mucha, and Ramon Casas i Carbó.[3]

By the age of 13, Baugh was producing and selling work professionally. At age 14, he won his first regional competition and at age 17, he had won his first national competition.[4] In the spring of 2004, he conducted his first workshop at the Village Arts of Putney in Vermont.[3]

Professional Evolution[edit]

Baugh studied under renowned artist and author Richard Schmid for four years and by age 21, he was already showing in galleries across the U.S. At age 25, he debuted his first solo exhibition in New York City, and continued to show after that.[5]

At 26 years of age, Casey Baugh was established as a major name in the ever growing "Bridge Art" movement of artists -- an innovative category of artists known for challenging the boundaries of representational art with their unique fusion of traditional painting techniques and contemporary approach and perspectives.

His works have been exhibited in galleries worldwide in both solo and group shows. The coverage of his 2013 solo exhibit Static being the most extensive to date. "...the profound similarities between Baugh's painted world and our own have the potential to unsettle and awaken us, as viewers, to a more vivid reality than we currently experience, and to freshly recognize the 'static' that interferes with our ability to connect with one another and live meaningfully."[6]

Awards and Achievements[edit]

His work has been featured on the covers of many publications, including The Artist's Magazine, American Artists Drawing Magazine, and American Art Collector. Baugh was also included in American Artist Magazine's "75 Greatest Artists of All Time" 75th Anniversary Issue.[7]

In 2005, he won the cover competition for American Artists Drawing Magazine. In 2009, he was runner-up for the same competition.[8]

In 2006, he was featured in the instructional video Sketching the Portrait with Casey Baugh.[9]

In 2008, Baugh's painting titled Erubescent was featured on the cover of American Art Collector Magazine along with a powerful 4-page artist profile in the issue.

In 2009, he won the People's Choice Award and First Honor at the International Portrait Competition hosted by the Portrait Society of America.[7]

In 2018, he was featured on the cover of the May/June issue of Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine.[10]
