Centre of Technical Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS) was officially established in October 2014 to train more technical expertise needed by the Sarawak State to industrialize the economy.[1]. CENTEXS was assigned to train and upskill the youth to meet the technical needs and requirements of the State industries focusing on the trade of Oil and Gas, Construction, Electrical and Port, and Textile and Hospitality [2] [3]. CENTEXS was formerly known as Pusat Latihan Pembangunan Belia (PLPB), administered by Yayasan Sarawak. It was then administered by Kementerian Kebudayaan, Belia dan Sukan, Sarawak [4]. From November 1986 until August 2011, CENTEXS has been transitioned under a few government departments before it officially becomes one of the units in Chief Minister Office, Sarawak.

CENTEXS transitioned from the training centre-based to the current technical trades training centre in preparation for the transformation of technical education in Sarawak. PLPB was an accredited centre for programmes with ‘Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia’ under Jabatan Pembangunan Kemahiran (JPK) and it has produced many skilled and semi-skilled workers to the needs of the industrial sector in the State.

CENTEXS took in its very first students numbering 352 in 2014. As on 20 February 2020, Centexs has 303 students. In line with the vision of the present Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg to transform the State towards digital economy, CENTEXS is also providing digital training programmes in collaboration with HUAWEI Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. to supply talent for digital infrastructures [5] [6]
