Chuck Pickard II, (born May 18, 1979) is an American professional basketball coach for the P.G. Valor American Basketball Association League. Pickard is the first African American Head Coach of a Prince George's County Professional Basketball team officially originated from Prince George's County, Maryland. He is the current 2018 Head Coach of the Year for the American Basketball Association Chesapeake Division P.G. Valor and the American Basketball Association (ABA) 2017-2018 Chesapeake Division Champion. He also is currently the Head Strength and Conditioning coach for Prince George's Community College Owls Men's Basketball Program.
College career[edit]
Chuck Pickard was inducted into the 2018 University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athletic Hall of Fame on February 23rd, 2018.[1] Pickard was a collegic four-sport athlete who is most known for his play on the baseball diamond as a shortstop who batted .350 his senior year with three home runs, 28 RBIs, a .525 slugging percentage, three home runs 42 hits and eight doubles. As a junior, he hit .314 with eight doubles, four triples, 37 hits and 12 RBIs. As a sophomore, he hit .318 with 47 hits, seven doubles, six triples and 20 RBI. In addition to being a .327 hitter, he also recorded the longest javelin throw in school history at 58 meters (since broken), and is credited with hitting the longest home run in school history (495 feet) while earning First-Team All-MEAC honors in 2002, Second-Team honors in 2001 and Honorable Mention in 2000. He was the 2002 Maryland Eastern Shore Male Athlete of the Year and baseball MVP in 2000, 2001 and 2002. Pickard officially signed with the Cook County Cheetahs (Illinois) in the spring of 2003 [2] but wound up playing just a season before returning to the Shore to get his Master's in Applied Health and Physiology with emphasis in Fitness and Sports Medicine at Salisbury University.
Coaching career[edit]
On March 1, 2005 Pickard was named the Director of Community Relations for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Women's Collegiate Basketball team. In the 2005-2006 season the UMES women's basketball team was able to achieve an overall record of 12-6.
On March 1, 2006 Pickard was named the Assistant Coach for the Prince George's Community College Owls Women's Basketball team. In the 2006-2007 season the Lady Owls were able to achieve an overall record of 27-4 and clenching the NJCAA Tourney Region XX and Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference (JUCO) titles for that year.
On November 15, 2006 Pickard was named the Head Coach of the Kettering Middle School Boys Basketball team. The Cougars achieved an overall record of 10-2 on the 2006-2007 season and 2nd place in the Prince George's County Public Schools Boys Basketball Conference. With his determination he was able to achieve All Central Maryland Conference Academic team honors, with players GPA successfully maintained at a 3.95 grade point average.
On November 15, 2007 Pickard was named Head Strength and Conditioning coach for Friendly High School Patriots Boys Varsity Basketball team, in which the team achieved a 11-11 record overall. 2008-2009 the team went 21-4 overall record on the season and won the Prince George's County Public School's 3A Division Championship. 2009-2010 the team achieved a 13-10 record overall. 2010-2011 the team went for a 24-4 overall record on the season and won the Prince George's County Public School's 3A Division Championship. In 2011-2012 the team achieved an overall record of 9-14 on the season.
On November 15, 2012 Pickard was named Head Strength and Conditioning coach for Dr. Henry A. Wise Pumas Boys Varsity Basketball team, in which the team achieved an overall record of 19-6 overall on the 2012-2013 season. In the 2013-2014 season, the Pumas achieved an overall record of 24-2, and won the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association Varsity Boys Championship. In the 2014-2015 season the Pumas achieved an overall record of 15-9 on the season. In the 2015-2016 season the Pumas achieved a 16-4 overall record. In the 2016-2017 season the Pumas achieved an overall record of 21-1 and won the Prince George's County Public School's 4A Division and Regional Championship. The Pumas were ranked 17th in the nation! In 2017-2018 the Pumas achieved an overall record of 20-5.
On November 1, 2016, Pickard signed a one-year contract and joined the P.G. Valor as the head coach of its inaugural season. In its first season debut in the American Basketball Association Chesapeake league, Valor achieved an overall record of 11-7 overall on the season. On November 1, 2017, Pickard signed a one-year contract and joined the P.G. Valor as the head coach. During the 2017-2018 season the Valor achieved in a 12-6 record and 2nd place in the American Basketball Association Chesapeake Division. On March 11, 2018, the Valor defeated the Baltimore Hawks in the Chesapeake Division Championship Finals.
Pickard's coaching style relies on defense, communication, commitment, confidence and consistency. He works from the aspect for starting out the season as the underdog and strategizing a plan to achieve a championship. He ensures that players work hard and believe in the vision for the team. He also prides himself by getting together the right leadership with the scrappiest of teams to strive to the highest level possible and succeed. With grit and determination he is able to exuberate to all players, staff, and organizational leaders the right mindset and drive to be the best to ever play the game of basketball.
