Children's Vaccine Initiative[edit]

The Children's Vaccine Initiative (CVI) was an international endeavor to harness new bio-technologies for developing new and improved vaccines with the aim of advancing the immunization of children in developing countries. It was both an idea and an organization.[1] Referred to as the predecessor of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations (GAVI)[2], it was a coalition of governments, UN organizations, non governmental and private organizations, industry and research groups.[3] It was officially launched at the World Summit for Children in New York City in September 1990.[1] The vaccine experts proposed various desirable features for the CVI vaccines before the summit, such as the vaccines be single dose (preferably oral), effective when administered near birth, combine antigens in novel ways, heat stable, effective against diseases for which vaccines are unavailable, and affordable.[1] Vaccines embodying these attributes offered the capacity to safeguard more of the world's children against a larger number of diseases at a lower cost per child or per disease prevented. CVI was brought to end in 1998 due to the ongoing conflicts between its participating partners.[2]
