Christian Canning - Author[edit]

Christian John Canning (born December 6, 1982) is an Australian middle grade author best known for his comic series, The Super Awesome Secret Adventures of Billy the Brave.

Biography[edit]

Christian is of Irish and English descent and grew up in the western suburb of Wetherill Park in the city of Sydney. He attended St Gertrude’s Primary, Patrician Brothers College Fairfield and All Saints Senior High School Casula.

Career[edit]

After high school, Christian went on to study a Bachelor of Nutrition at the UWS Hawkesbury campus. After deferring the course, he began working on his boyhood dream of writing a cartoon series for a middle grade audience.

The initial series was titled ‘The City of…’ and was based around his everyday life in the familiar grounds of where he grew up in the city of Sydney. It eventually changed from a cartoon script to a comic series and was renamed ‘The Super Awesome Secret Adventures of Billy the Brave’. The only two characters to survive the change were Danny Tan and Professor Brady. A nutritional theme was added to the comic series as Christian believes it is an important topic to introduce to children and something that can help them reach their full potential.

When asked his advice on studying and academics Christian replied, ‘Uni was fine, but it’s not for everyone. I was glad I tried it but have no regrets leaving it behind because it just wasn’t my thing. My approach to writing was simple, read and write every day and you’ll eventually get really good at it. That goes for anything you put your mind to’.

In between writing his comic series, Christian wrote his debut middle grade Novella titled, ‘Kenny Cunningham, Kid Detective – My Life Undercover’.
