Christina Kallas is an award-winning independent filmmaker, book author and professor for film, based in New York City.[1] [2]

Biography[edit]

Christina Kallas was born in Thessaloniki, Greece and graduated from Free University Berlin with a double master’s degree in film and music studies, and a PhD in film studies.

Prior to relocating to NYC, she worked for over 15 years as a screenwriter and producer, based in Berlin. She produced and penned the screenplay for political thriller The Commissioner[3] starring John Hurt, produced Toronto and Berlin selection hybrid narrative/doc Mothers[4] directed by Milcho Manchevski, co-produced BBC Films and Polygram's hooligan drama I.D.,[5] and wrote several episodes of the award-winning German television series Danni Lowinski[6] and Edel & Starck.[7]

In 2011 Kallas founded the Writers Improv Studio in New York City, which focuses on the art of improvisation and the merging of actor and character, applying Kallas' signature method of blending character work and emotional structure theory. Kallas workshops her screenplays prior to shooting with the Writers Improv Studio ensemble, a process which she has filmed and published as 42 Short Films on 42 Seconds of Happiness.[8]

Christina Kallas' directorial debut, 42 Seconds of Happiness (2016)[9] has gone on to receive accolades and be screened at several festivals. It won Best Feature Film at WTxFF in Dallas 2016,[10] [11] Best Ensemble Cast at Harlem International Film Festival 2016, Indie Spirit Award and Best Ensemble Cast at Princeton Independent Film Festival 2016,[12] Best American Film in the Jaipur International Film Festival 2017, as well as nominations for the Emerging Director Award at the St. Louis International Film Festival 2016, Best Ensemble Cast in a Feature Film Award at Orlando Film Festival 2016,[13] the FIPRESCI Award at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival 2017,[14] [15] and the Exberliner Award at the Achtung Berlin Film Festival - new berlin film award 2017. The film was picked up for distribution by Indie Rights and is currently available in 13 countries on Amazon Prime.[16]

Her second feature film, The Rainbow Experiment (2017)[17] was 1 of 5 independent works-in-progress selected in 2017 by US in Progress Paris, an initiative of the Champs-Élysées Film Festival, which aims at fostering the promotion and distribution of American independent cinema and at 'discovering new talents with a unique point of view'.[18]

Christina Kallas' unusual process and films have been featured in Filmmaker Magazine,[19], on Directed by Women,[20] and on Selig Film News.[21]

Kallas was President of the Federation of Screenwriters in Europe FSE from 2005 to 2013.[22] She was honored for her outstanding contribution to the international writers’ community, which includes the European Screenwriters Manifesto,[23] and the World Conference of Screenwriters.[24] She has written several books on the art of writing for the screen including Creative Screenwriting: Understanding Emotional Structure and Inside the Writers’ Room: Conversations with American TV Writers.[25] She also wrote a monthly column for Ted Hope’s blog Hope For Film.[26] Kallas has taught at the Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie Berlin, at The New School and at Columbia University School of the Arts Film Program, and is currently a Visiting Associate Professor at Barnard College in New York City.[27]

She is a member of the European Film Academy, the Film Fatales and the Writers Guild of America, East.
