Clarence Francis "Larry" Matthews (May 1, 1906 – July 22, 2017) was an American supercentenarian.[1]

He was born in Oakland, California as the fifth oldest child of nine to Frank and Maryanne Matthews. His sister Clairbel Gow (born August 22, 1911) is 106 years old.[2] He started a successful construction company in the 1970s. He was twice married, first to Barbara Hirsher (on June 9, 1931, with whom he had two children), and then to Kay. Matthews was the oldest man in the United States following the death of US army veteran Frank Levingston on May 3, 2016.[3] The California State Assembly passed a resolution to honor his longevity.[4] Matthews died in Indian Wells, California on July 22, 2017 at the age of 111.

Born during the Theodore Roosevelt administration, he had lived through both World War I and World War II and supported his family through the era of The Great Depression. The current oldest man in the US is army veteran Richard Arvin Overton.[5]
