Classens Have

Classens Have is the name of the garden between the streets Classensgade and Arendalsgade. It is located at Østerbro, in Copenhagen.

It was built in 1925 by Valdemar Fabricius Hansen in association with the residential complex Ved Classens Have. Earlier, the name Classens Have was used for a larger property in Østerbro. Its area was limited by the current streets Østerbrogade, Classensgade, Gefionsgade and Rosenvængets Allé.

The name Classens Have stems from its last owner, Major General Johan Frederik Classen (1725–1792), who, at the time of his death, donated it, along with his remaining relics, to the Classical Fideicommis.

The original Classens Have long formed a single property and changed its name with the changing owners. In 1658, it was named Verner Klauman's Have and is mentioned as such in the siege's history. Later it was called the Laurvigens Have and Ahlefeldts Have, until it became known in the late 1700s as it was expanded to Classens Have.

Classens Have became most famous by the end of British Seige on August 31, 1807. The Danish force had more than 2000 soldiers from the Kings army under Major Frederik Conrad von Holstein. The outcome drove the Englishmen to retreat and the garden was cleared for the trees and buildings that blocked the view. However, this successive outcome had little significance for the later progress of the siege. The Justinenborg property was destroyed during the battle, and the garden was free in several years after. Several street names in the now built neighborhood remember this event (Holsteinsgade, Livjægergade).
