CLAUS KIEFER (born on April 25, 1958 in Karlsruhe) is a German theoretical physicist working on quantum gravity, cosmology, the theory of black holes, and the foundations of quantum theory.[1] [2]

Kiefer studied physics and astronomy at the University of Heidelberg and the University of Vienna. He made his PhD in Heidelberg in 1988 with Dieter Zeh on the concept of time in quantum gravity. He was a postdoc in Heidelberg (1988/89) and at the University of Zurich (1989-93). He then became a lecturer at the University of Freiburg (1993-2001) and is a professor for theoretical physics at the University of Cologne since 2001.[3] [4] [5] He was visiting professor at the University of Tours (1996) and at the University of Montpellier (2004). Further long-term visits include the University of Cambridge and the Albert Einstein Institute in Potsdam.

In 2009, Kiefer was awarded second prize by the Foundational Questions Institute, USA, for his essay “Does time exist in quantum gravity?”.[6] [7] In 2012, he was awarded first prize (together with Manuel Krämer) by the Gravity Research Foundation, USA, for his essay “Can Effects of Quantum Gravity Be Observed in the Cosmic Microwave Background?”. [8] [9] [10]

Kiefer has written a monograph on quantum gravity which is presently in its 3rd edition.[11]
