The Columban Art Calendar[1] is an iconic Catholic Calendar, famous for its traditional religious arts and liturgical information produced by St Columban Mission Society [also known as Columbans] in Australia and New Zealand. The annually produced Calendar is one of the fundraisers for the Society.

About St Columban Mission Society[edit]

The Columbans are a missionary society of Catholic priests who work in 16 countries including Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Britain, Ireland, China, Japan, Korea, Myanmar (former Burma), Philippines, Taiwan, Pakistan, Chile, Peru, Brazil, and the United States. St Columbans Mission Society was founded in 1918 and takes its name from St Columban, Ireland's sixth-century missionary to Europe.[2]

History of the Columban Art Calendar[edit]

The first Columban Art Calendar was produced in 1923 as a small calendar as a fundraising venture by the Australian outpost of the Irish Mission to China. It was printed on thin paper, with each page being torn off at the perforated edge along its binding.

This inaugural calendar had photographs from China of landscapes, schools and missionaries. The 1923 Calendar holds the masthead 'The Irish Mission to China', and each page has a message for Australian congregations and benefactors.

The Calendar is a religious, liturgical art Calendar. Every month features a traditional Christian religious painting that reflects a feast day occurring during the month or other days of religious significance for the month. The artworks are sourced from leading fine art distributors like Bridgeman Images.

Columbans also produce in-depth Art Guide which gives an insightful explanation of each painting featured in the Columban Art Calendar compiled by Claire Renkin, Art Historian and Lecturer at Yarra Theological Union and narrated by Robyn Moore (Voice Artist and Professional Speaker) and recorded by George Goerss at Sonic Solutions.[4]
