Company Dreamer is a 2017 science-fiction action novel written by Enan Joe Heneghan divided into twenty-five chapters. A cautionary tale about the dream recording industry, genetic engineering, and unregulated surveillance plays out over the course of only a few short days in the dream business. It presents the aftermath of Hollywood's collapse when edited dream content called REMvies take the place of movies. Dreamers are the new global celebrities hounded by both fans and rival dream studios. And there are dreamers for every genre.

The novel follows the underdog dream-weaving company, Dream Bow, as its maniacal founder, and co-creator of the D.R.M. (Dream Recording Machine), Corin Carrow, attempts to take on the monopolizing Mind Bard Studios. Through intensive role-playing and augmenting reality, the "Lunas" of Dreams Bow find their waking-state taken to limits for the sake of enhancing their dreams.

It depicts a futuristic look into the future implications of stardom in a world where there is no privacy. The dreamers lives are manipulated, distorted, and ultimately owned by their dream producers and editors. And to make it all the more interesting, dream companies have dreamers for every genre. And sell their waking states as well, packaging them as "Histories". When signing on to be a Company Dreamer, the number one multi-genre dreamer in the world, Genevieve Carrow, discovers her whole mind is forfeited.

Plot[edit]

The REMvi business is booming and the leading dream studios are pushing the limits of their dreamer's minds.

Twenty-six-year-old Genevieve “Vi” Carrow is the number one Luna in the world, but wants out of the dream recording industry. The trouble is, her father, Corin Carrow, is her dream producer and will stop at nothing to keep her dreaming potent and profitably for his Dream Bow Studio. As Vi does all she can to sabotage her dreams, Corin does everything in his power to amplify them.

As a result, Vi’s waking life becomes the canvas Corin prefaces her nightly dream output with. With the help of his company's dreamers and crew, Corin manipulates the characters and scenarios his daughter faces. The little control Vi once had over her destiny slips further away as Dream Bow and Co. destroy the lives of those she holds dearest for the sake of her neurrative quality.

Vi begins to learn that her place in the dream recording may be even more significant than she could have ever dreamed, when she begins to uncover the truth about her lineage. Her father's relentless dogging, her boyfriend's strange behaviors, and dreamers vying for her spot as at the top of the box office are central throughout.

Origins[edit]

The novel began as screenplay, Dream2Movie[1], which was written as a final project for a 2009 graduate level teaching course taught by Brian Charest. The concept for the dream recording industry was derived from Heneghan's aim to write characters that were overt genre designations. The idea was adapted for the first time in 2011 by Heneghan, and writing partner, Gregory Scott Allen, as a ten episode TV series[2]. The following year the two co-produced the reality web-series, "The Insight Company"[3], which showcases struggling Chicago actors reading through the episodes and commenting on one another's chances of attaining their acting dreams. The only two characters that exist in all iterations of the story are top-dreamer Genevieve and dream-producer Corin.
