Competition Bikini

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

  1. A Competition Bikini[1] is specifically designed for the stage, unlike the typical swimsuit, it is not intended to be used for swimming. Competition bikinis share more similarities to stage costumes than the typical swimsuit, this departure occurred on November 2010 when IFBB[2] introduce the bikini division[3] to the Bodybuilding[4] and fitness competition world.

Types of Competition Bikinis[edit]

The bikinis in this division usually include crystal or decorative connecting straps for the hips, shoulders or back. There are no connecting straps from the bottom to the top, this allows for bottoms to be more flattering to the gluteus.

History[edit]

The first adaptation of competition bikinis appeared at local Miss Hawaiian Tropic Model Search contests in 1998, which was quickly followed by the local and regional Hooters pageants in 2001. The fitness competition world included the bikini division in 2010, and has since grown to become the largest and most popular division.

Distinctions[edit]

There are 3 major distinctions that separates competition bikinis from their counter part:

  1. Design: Since the purpose of the bikinis are to show off and compliment the muscle, the amount of coverage on a competition bikini is much less than the typical swimsuit. This is especially true when it comes to the design of the bikini bottoms. In effort to enhance the gluteus, early designers have invented what is referred to as a scrunch butt bottom.
  2. Material: The lycra[10] fabrics used are the same as stage costume material, bright colors resulting from over saturation of fabric dye. Some are manufactured with sequins[11] and others have hologram appliqué. While regular swimwear material use water and chemical resistant dyes, stage materials do not. It is for this reason that competition bikinis are not recommended to be used for swimming, the combination of water and chemicals can cause the over saturated fabrics to bleed off dye.
  3. Accessory: Metallic connectors and crystals[12] are integral part of the competition bikini design, the desire to sparkle and stand out on stage has become the focal point of the designer. Materials used to embellish competition bikinis are rarely found on regular swimsuits, the primary reason is the amount of labor and high cost.
