Copilot (German title: Die Welt wird eine andere sein) is a 2021 German-French feature film directed by Anne Zohra Berrached. The relationship drama centers on a German-Turkish student (played by Canan Kir) who falls in love with a fellow Lebanese student (Roger Azar) and marries him despite objections from her family. Told from the subjective perspective of the female character, the film follows the couple over five years in five chapters. The husband's increasingly strong Islamist radicalization puts the couple's marriage to the test and ultimately leads to a catastrophe of global proportions. Director Berrached worked very intuitively and allowed a lot of improvisation in order to get the greatest possible authenticity from her actors.

The fictional work is based on the biography of terrorist Ziad Jarrah, without directly referencing it. Jarrah was a pilot involved in the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States.[1]

Reception[edit]

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the preview of Copilot took place in March 2021 at the Berlinale's "Industry Event", where the film was included in the Panorama section. A regular world premiere took place on June 13, 2021, as part of the Berlinale's Audience Festival ("Summer Special")

The subject of the film tends to humanize a terrorist, it maybe for that reason, that the film wasn't presented on American festivals.

Awards[edit]

The film received the main prize of the Feature Film Competition and the Popular Jury of the renowned Italian Lucca Film Festival and Europa Cinema. It was nominated for the Panorama Audience Award at the Berlinale 2021. Copilot also was shortlisted for the German Film Award.[2]
