Corey McVicar (Born: August 24, 1962 in Sydney, Australia) is an Australian Classical pianist. He is a Professor of piano at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music[1] [2] He attended the Sydney Conservatorium of Music from age 12 studying piano with Nancy Salas and Sonya Hanke. [3] His first debut as soloist with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at the Sydney Opera House was at age 17 under the direction of conductor Patrick Thomas. In the early 1980's there were subsequent performances with the SSO with conductors Patrick Thomas and Myer Fredman and also with the Sydney Youth Orchestra and conductor Richard Gill both at the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Town Hall and at the Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall in Singapore.[4] In Australia he was a winner of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's Instrumental and Vocal Competition [5] and the David Paul Landa Memorial Scholarship and he was invited in the late 1990's to perform at Sydney Parliament House to commemorate the scholarship anniversary. His playing was reviewed as " duly poetic and exhilarating" by long serving Sydney Morning Herald music critic Fred Blanks.[6] He studied piano in Germany, France and the United States where he has resided since 1986. His studies included lessons with renowned pianists Yvonne Lefebure, Ann Schein Carlyss, Anne Koscielny, Leon Fleisher and Murray Perahia. In 1990 he was a top prize winner in the New York Frinna Awerbuch International Piano Competition[7] He joined the faculty of the Peabody Conservatory of Music and Preparatory of the Johns Hopkins University in 1988 where he taught piano for 23 years until moving to California in 2011.[8] His recordings Tableaux and Homage for VDA Classics were released in 2011.[9]
