Cory Mo
Cory Allen Moore (Born November 11, 1977), professionally known as Cory Mo, is an American Record Producer, Songwriter, DJ, Mix Engineer Artist & Entrepreneur from Houston, Texas currently residing in Atlanta, Georgia.
Career[edit]
Cory Mo has worked with dozens of artists including UGK, TLC, Gucci Mane, Mya, Big Boi, Talib Kweli, Raheem DeVaughn, Geto Boys, Big KRIT, and others. In 1997, Cory went on his first tour as a hype man for former Geto Boys member Big Mike. His relationship with Pimp C and Bun B put him in a position to be heavily-involved in UGK’s movement, as well as production & featured appearances on their legendary projects. He went on tour with Bun B as his hype man while Pimp C was in jail. He joined UGK on tour after Pimp C was released from jail and was a premier artist on Pimp C’s Label UGK Records. Tragedy struck the tight-knit crew with the passing of Pimp C on December 4, 2007. After months of grieving the loss of what felt like a family member, Cory Mo & older brother Mike Mo moved to Atlanta, Ga. for a fresh start. He was focused on music but also made it his mission to continue the legacy of Pimp C through his blog site CountryRapTunes.com Country Rap Tunes is a movement that welcomes and celebrates the history of southern hip-hop, it also embraces “Country Cousins” world wide, such as Dizzy Rascal in London, Talib Kweli in Brooklyn & Snoop in Long Beach, and aims to unify artists and supporters through appreciation of the southern sound and culture, past and present.
Early Life[edit]
Born and raised in Houston, TX, music was a part of his family environment for as long as Cory Mo can remember and his fascination with instrumentation was a part of his DNA. During elementary school, Cory’s grandfather sang in the church choir and would let him mess around on his organ from time to time. His uncle Kenneth also played the drums at church and would allow young Cory to bang out on them whenever he was around. Trying to work on his craft without the money to pay for production was motivation to start producing his own records. “I started producing when I realized I couldn’t afford to buy beats to rap on. My brother Mike and I put our money together and bought some studio equipment. The first piece was an MPC 2000-XL Drum Machine, a midi keyboard controller and sound module called the “Proteus 2000.”
Present Career[edit]
Cory Mo owns and operates M.A.D. Studios, currently based in Decatur, Ga. Cory Mo and his brother established the studio in their hometown of Houston, Texas in 1999. M.A.D. Studios ATL is thriving in the Atlanta music scene, with TLC, Bun B, Gucci Mane and Scotty ATL among other artist who turn to the studio for recording, producing or mastering of their tracks and projects. Cory Mo launched Country Rap Tunes Radio on December 29, 2017 Pimp C’s birthday, which is a free music streaming service that plays classic southern hip-hop he was brought up on, worked to produce, and has grown to represent. Most recently, Cory Mo launched a clothing line called “Jus Sayin Clothing,” which creates custom shirts, hoodies, jackets, polos, bags, joggers, hats, shoes and more.
Production Style and Influences[edit]
As a youngster Cory Mo’s playlist was a mash-up of smooth R&B and gangsta hip hop. “Smokey Robinson, Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, NWA, UGK, & Outkast, that’s a weird combination but that’s what I like.” Cory Mo recalls starting to write poetry in the 5th grade and being intrigued with using words to tell short stories. “My old brother “Mike Mo” who is 6 years older was in a really popular rap group in high school and I wanted to be like him so I stole all his cassette tapes, like Run DMC, NWA, Big Daddy Kane, Geto Boys and the Beastie Boys. I liked Ice Cube the most so I use to write his lyrics down and study them line for line. That’s how I learned how to write verses,” Cory Mo recalls. Writing verses turned into bars and eventually turned into songs, birthing Cory Mo the artist by the time he entered high school.
