Crane De-Rating

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Crane De-Rating is very popular in many different areas all over the world. Whether for the use to bypass certain laws and regulations or just to de-rate your crane to a specific maximum working load. In order to use cranes over 2000lb lifting capacity you must obtain certain licenses specific to the crane you will be using. Cranes not lifting more than 2000lb can be exempt from the licenses if the serial number indicates that the crane is not able to lift more than the max lift rating of 2000lb.

Other reasons like stated above to de-rate a crane is to simply get around certain laws and regulations. For instance, in New York cranes over 35 tons have to have an oiler. So if you de-rate your crane to a max lift rating of 35 tons you will not have to have an oiler on hand. Many unions require 2 man teams or more than one person to be at a crane site for certain tonnages so companies will de-rate their equipment to get around having to send out multiple people.

Another group that almost always de-rates their equipment is the military.

Crane de-rating just requires depending on the model of crane you are using either a fuse, computer program, changing the cable strength or placing a valve in. When you de-rate you will also have to install all new max lifting charts and in most cases a page for the manual.

When you de-rate a crane it does not mean you are stuck with that max lifting capacity forever. You can simply just reprogram, new fuse, change cable or remove the valve. That being said you will also have to replace the max lifting charts to show the updated lift rating.

Many small companies currently are de-rating their equipment so they do not have to obtain the many expensive licenses OHSA says that your employees need to run the cranes. Many companies that do not lift more than 2000lb can de-rate the cranes they have by contacting the manufacturer from whom the crane is from to figure out how to best de-rate your crane or by getting the serial number information to state the max lift rating is not more than 2000lb. As stated above when you change anything the max lift rating charts need to reflect the rating associated to the serial number.
