Overview[edit]

The Craniofacial Developmental Biology Laboratory, also known as the Liao Lab, works toward better understanding the developmental genetics behind facial morphogenesis. Located at the Center for Regenerative Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, the laboratory performs research on the developing palate and neural crest cells to better understand the genetics behind facial development. By using the zebrafish model, the lab can take advantage of the forward and reverse genetics of the organism while still retaining many of the same genes present in humans as well as the same coordination of complex molecular and morphogenic cues.[1] Furthermore, the zebrafish palate (ethmoid plate) is morphogenetically homologous to the mammalian primary palate.[2]

The principal investigator of the Craniofacial Developmental Biology Laboratory is Dr. Eric C. Liao, MD, Ph.D. Dr. Liao graduated from Stanford University (B.S., M.S.), and Harvard Medical School / M.I.T (M.D., Ph.D.). He trained in plastic surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Dr. Liao is an associate professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School, a principal faculty member and a principal investigator at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, and the Deputy Director of Research at Boston Shriners Hospital.[3] As a surgeon, Dr. Liao focuses in both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Liao has researched and published about patient safety, such as the prevention of deep vein thrombosis in breast reconstruction patients.[4] Dr. Liao commonly performs human cleft reconstructive surgery and, through his lab, has reproduced the pathology of oblique facial clefts in the zebrafish model.[5] For the Cleft and Craniofacial awareness month at Shriner's Hospital for Children in July 2017, Laney's Story[6] and Penny's Story[7] were featured and are both Dr. Liao's patients.
