Culture Kings Pty Ltd is an Australian streetwear and sports fashion retail company,[1] based in Brisbane, with 8 stores located throughout Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria & Western Australia,[2] and selling worldwide via their websites.

Culture Kings is well known for their immersive shopping experience with in-store DJs, Holy Grail arcade games and basketball courts,[3][4][5] plus exclusive items located within a separate room called The Vault.[4]

The Culture Kings brand has become internationally synonymous with celebrity store visits, seeing high profile names across music, film and sport often requesting private shopping experiences and organizing meet-and-greet opportunities for fans in-store.[6][7] Culture Kings has hosted the likes of Jason Derulo, Drake,[8] Wu-Tang Clan,[9] Jaden Smith, Ben Simmons,[10] Snoop Dogg,[11] and Cristiano Ronaldo.[12]

History[edit]

Co-founder, Simon Beard, began his career straight out of school selling Schoolies merchandise and clothing imported from the US, at Carrara Markets on the Gold Coast in Queensland.[13][14]

Simon soon also began selling items on eBay, primarily sneakers, under the brand 'Culture Kings'. The name itself was borrowed from one of his suppliers based in the US, a small boutique clothing retailer located in Miami, Florida. Unfortunately, the supplier's business was struggling, so with an affinity for the brand and wishing to secure the trademark in order to continue operating under the Culture Kings name, Simon offered to acquire the business for $30,000.[14]

Simon, along with his wife and fellow co-founder Tahnee, opened their first self-funded Culture Kings store in 2008, with a small shop located on the Gold Coast.[13][14] Culture Kings has since grown its presence to 8 stores located throughout Australia[2] and an internet presence of three websites delivering products worldwide; Culture Kings Australia, Culture Kings New Zealand and Culture Kings USA.

Product Range[edit]

Culture Kings offer sports-fashion apparel for men, women and children including large ranges of t-shirts, hoodies, headwear and footwear, and extensive collections of official NBA, NFL and NHL team merchandise.

The company stock apparel from brands including Nike, Adidas, Stussy, Tommy Hilfiger, Champion and Calvin Klein, in addition to many of their own in-house designed and developed labels including Saint Morta, The Anti Order and Carre.

Well known for their sneaker releases, Culture Kings also offer limited edition Nike and Jordan footwear. To combat against resellers and price gouging, Culture Kings often restrict the purchasing of these products to one per customer and require the items to be physically worn when leaving the store.[15]

Warehouse Fire[edit]

Around 3pm on 8 January 2017, a fire broke out at the Culture Kings warehouse in Acacia Ridge, Queensland. Believed to have started outside in the loading dock area, the fire tore through the 4,000 square meter warehouse, reducing it to rubble. It took a total of 25 firefighters from 12 fire crews over 4 hours to contain the blaze.[16][17]

After the fire, Culture Kings relocated their warehouse operations to a new location in Archerfield, Queensland.[18]
