CURRENTS NEW MEDIA[1] is an annual new media arts festival in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It showcases new and emerging media art and electronic art from artists across New Mexico, the United States, and the world. CURRENTS "is an interactive experience of multimedia light, sound, and moving-image art in venues around town, almost all of them free of charge."[2] Categories of art exhibited include digital art, interactive environments, installations (interactive and non-interactive), outdoor installations and projections, virtual/augmented/mixed reality environments, robotics, multimedia performance, digitally generated objects (i.e. 3D printing), interactive installations for children, single channel video, computer animation, and experimental film/documentary. Associated events include artist talks, workshops, presentations, multimedia performances, and independent exhibitions throughout the city of Santa Fe.[3]

CURRENTS NEW MEDIA is a project of Parallel Studios, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Founders and co-executive artistic directors Frank Ragano and Mariannah Amster began the annual festival officially in 2010,[4] though the first CURRENTS NEW MEDIA pop-up exhibition occurred in 2002 featuring six new media artists from New Mexico.[5] 2019 will be the festival's tenth annual year. The festival occurs annually beginning on the first Thursday of June at El Museo Cultural de Santa Fe in Santa Fe's Railyard Arts District and runs for three weeks.[6]

CURRENTS NEW MEDIA has a Directory Board of local and national Directors and an Artistic Board of Advisors, which includes David Stout, co-founder of NoiseFold.[7] The festival's attendance in 2017 was approximately 8,000 individual visitors[8] and rose to approximately 8,500 individual attendees in 2018,[9] with 3,000 of those visitors attending on the opening night. The 2018 festival had an economic impact of over $1,367,000 in city-wide revenue.[10]

Artists who have participated in CURRENTS NEW MEDIA include Steina and Woody Vasulka, Tony Abeyta, Brian Bowman, Yi Zhou, Purin Phanichphant, Meridel Rubenstein, Marpi, Patrick Saint-Denis, members of the National Film Board of Canada, and students from the Santa Fe University of Art and Design. Partners include Meow Wolf,[11] the Harwood Museum of Art, New Mexico Museum of Art, the Lensic Theater, SITE Santa Fe, the Santa Fe Opera, and Jean Cocteau Cinema.
