Curtis J. Bonk is an American Professor of Instructional Systems Technology (IST) in the School of Education at Indiana University. He teaches psychology and technology courses and is adjunct in the School of Informatics.[1] He is a passionate and energetic speaker, writer, educational psychologist, instructional technologist, and entrepreneur as well as a former CPA and corporate controller.[2] The locus of his research centers on distance learning and in the area of emerging technologies for learning.

Personal life[edit]

Bonk was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, U.S. to parents Jerome Bonk and Joanne Bonk (maiden name Goronja); one of five children (Curtis, Ann, Thomas, Cathleen, and Richard). He is a proud father of two, son Alexander and daughter Nicole.[3]

Education and academic career[edit]

Bonk graduated, Magna Cum Laude, from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 1981 with a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Accounting. On December 16, 1983 Bonk became a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). In 1987 he received his Master’s in Educational Psychology and 1989, Bonk received his Ph.D. majoring in Educational Psychology; Concentrations: Human Learning; Human Development and a minor in Curriculum and Instruction: Educational Technology, both from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.[4]

Bonk has been a Senior Research Fellow with both the Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Lab within the Department of Defense (2003-2005) as well as the Army Research Institute (1999-2003). Bonk is also a founding member of the Center for Research on Learning and Technology (CRLT) at Indiana University which opened in the late 1990s. Drawing on his background as a corporate controller, CPA, educational psychologist, and instructional technologist, Bonk offers unique insights into the intersection of business, education, psychology, and technology. Bonk is the founder and president of CourseShare, LLC since 1999. As president of CourseShare, he has travelled the world training educators to teach online and give motivational talks about new technologies for teaching and learning.[5] In 2003 in founded SurveyShare, Inc. which he sold 2010. Before joining the School of Education at Indiana University in 1992, Bonk was on the faculty at West Virginia University College of Education and Human Resources (1989–1992).[4]

In terms of teaching, Bonk received the Burton Gorman Teaching Award in the School of Education, Indiana University in 1999. He was also the first recipient of the Wibert Hites Mentoring Award at Indiana University in 2000. In 2003, Bonk was awarded the Innovative Teaching Award: Teaching in a Distance Education Program from the Indiana Partnership for Statewide Education during the Indiana Higher Education Telecommunication System Conference at Ball State University. In 2020, Bonk was awarded the Indiana University President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning Technology.[1]

Bonk has received much acclaim for his research and overall scholarship. Between 2012 and 2018 Bonk was annually named by Education Next and listed in Education Week among the top contributors to the public debate about education from more than 20,000 university-based academics. In August 2014, he was the recipient of the Mildred B. and Charles A. Wedemeyer Award for Outstanding Practitioner in Distance Education at the 30th annual Wisconsin Distance Teaching and Learning Conference in Madison, Wisconsin. Also in 2014 he received the award for Outstanding Contribution to Education from the Global Learn Tech Conference in Mumbai, India.[6][7]

Bonk is also the recipient of the 2002 CyberStar Award from the Indiana Information Technology Association, the Most Outstanding Achievement Award from the U.S. Distance Learning Association (2003), and the Online Learning Journal Outstanding Research Achievement Award in Online Education from Online Learning Consortium in 2017, to name a few. In 2012, Bonk was selected as one of 24 presenters for a special NSF Cyberlearning Research Summit on "Transforming Education" held at National Geographic in Washington, DC.[8]

Bonk has been a designated Visiting Scholar/Professor and Adjunct Professor at 11 different institutions including Taiwan (twice), Japan, Finland (twice), Wales, Scotland, Canada, China, Australia, and the USA. He has also been interviewed for articles and reports from the Wall Street Journal Online, The New York Times, China Daily, The Boston Globe, Education Week, U.S. News & World Report, Delta Sky Miles Magazine, AARP, The Seoul Economic Daily, The Central Intelligence Agency, the APA Monitor, the Chronicle of Higher Education, the Sydney Morning Herald, and much more. He has appeared on NPR in various cities, WGN TV Chicago, STARLINK Dallas, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp, Radio Adelaide, the USA Radio Network, Tech Talk, New Zealand National Radio, Channel One TV New Zealand, and PBS TV for Cincinnati, Ohio.

Research[edit]

Bonk is a firm believer in distance learning since he is a product of it. He is a popular conference speaker with many books in the area of emerging technologies for learning. He is currently conducting research in the field of self-directed online learning environments (SOLEs) and open education.[9] His work has been supported through grants from various institutions institutions and organizations including the U.S. Department of Education, Ackerman Family Foundation, Army Research Institute, U.S. Department of Defense, and Arthur Vining Davis Foundations.[4]

Bonk has reviewed, edited, and published more than 130 journal articles, over 60 book chapters, and 18 books and special journal issues on research related to various emerging learning technologies, online pedagogy and motivation, online and blended learning, MOOCs and open education, and the global impacts from collaborative technology.[10] Listed below is just a few of his published works.
