Cyril Fisher is an academic pathologist. He is Consultant Histopathologist at Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham UK and Emeritus Professor of Tumour Pathology at the Institute of Cancer Research, University of London.

Early life[edit]

Cyril Fisher was educated at Magdalen College, Oxford and University College Hospital Medical School, London, graduating in medicine with degrees of MA, BM BCh (Oxon).  Subsequently he obtained the research doctorates of Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Doctor of Science (DSc). He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists and an Honorary Member of the Royal College of Radiologists (Oncology).    

Career[edit]

Fisher undertook postgraduate training in pathology at University College Hospital Medical School, London s. He was Lecturer and Senior Lecturer at University College London, then Assistant Professor at Dartmouth College, New Hampshire USA.  He was Consultant Histopathologist at The Royal Marsden Hospital from 1982-20181 and Professor of Tumour Pathology at the Institute of Cancer Research, University of London from 2001-18, and for many years UK reference pathologist for clinical trials of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC)2.  Fisher is an expert in diagnosis of soft tissue sarcomas, rare malignant tumours that affect children and adults. He has published three textbooks3,4,5 and over 500 scientific articles6, and been involved in discovery of several genetic changes in these tumour types.  He is Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Surgical Pathology.7 In 2016 he was awarded the President’s Medal of the British Division of the International Academy of Pathology (BDIAP) for excellence in teaching.8
