Livingston Allen (born May 17, 1991), known professionally as DJ Akademiks, is an Jamaican-American blogger and social media personality whose primary focus is hip-hop industry news. Akademiks began his career as a DJ before pivoting to news media. Throughout his media career he has run his own website and worked for Complex.[1], but he now primarily publishes content through social media, where he has developed a large following. Akademiks is a controversial figure in the music industry, having been involved in feuds with many prominent figures including Nicki Minaj,[2] Meek Mill,[3], and Charlamagne tha God.[4] Akademiks has received criticism for his association with disgraced ‘snitch’ rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine[5]. He has also released satirical music under the Lil AK moniker.

Akademiks has been referred to by the New York Post as a “hip hop gossip maven”.[6]

Early life[edit]

Livingston Allen was born on May 17, 1991 in Spanish Town, Jamaica, but relocated to the United States as a teenager.[7] Allen attended Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Biomathematics.[8][9] Allen adopted the DJ Akademiks name while in college.[10] He retains this name although he no longer works as a DJ.

Media career[edit]

While he was working as a DJ in college, Allen launched the 'Late Night Creep' website to cover hip-hop news. The website is no longer active. As the popularity of his website grew, Allen launched the companion YouTube channel 'LateNightCreepVids' in October 2012, which was later renamed 'DJ Akademiks'. His first viral video was a 2013 profile of a robbery incident involving 2 Chainz.[11] [12]

Akademiks' breakthrough came in 2017, when Complex hired him to host the news media show 'Everyday Struggle' alongside veteran rapper Joe Budden and Nadeska Alexis.[13] Akademiks' profile was boosted following an incident at the 2017 BET Awards, where an interview of the Migos by the Everyday Struggle hosts devolved into a heated confrontation between Budden and the Migos' entourage.[14] The incident received worldwide attention on the internet[15], and Akademiks' role in the incident was widely memed.[16]. 'Everyday Struggle' ended in December 2020.[17]

Music career[edit]

Since 2018, Allen has released hip-hop music as his alter-ego "Lil AK".[18] Lil AK is a satirical character who is a parody of Soundcloud rappers. His debut single "Blues Clues" was released in April 2018, with an accompanying music video posted on his personal Youtube channel.

Lil AK released his debut EP "Clout Chaser" in December 2018, and in February 2019 released a collaborative single, "Lanes", with 6ix9ine. "Lanes" has over 16 million Spotify streams as of 2021.[19]

In September 2020, Lil AK was featured on the track 'GATA' from 6ix9ine's critically panned album TattleTales.
