Dakota Adventist Academy (DAA) is a co-educational boarding secondary school operated by the Dakota Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. It is a part of the Seventh-day Adventist education system, the world's second largest Christian school system.[1]. The school opened to students in 1902 and is now located northwest of Bismarck, North Dakota in Burleigh County.

Location[edit]

Dakota Adventist Academy is located on more than one thousand acres fourteen miles northwest of Bismarck, North Dakota, on the Missouri River. It is one of the northernmost academies in the continental United States, and has the distinction of being on the Lewis and Clark Trail.

Accreditation[edit]

DAA is accredited with the Accrediting Association of Seventh-day Adventist Schools, Colleges, and Universities . DAA is one of the seven affiliated secondary schools operating in the Mid-America Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. It is also accredited by the National Council for Private School Accreditation [2], and is approved by the state of North Dakota as a secondary school.

School History[edit]

Dakota Adventist Academy began in 1902 and 1904 with the creations of Plainview Academy and Sheyenne River Academy. Dakota Adventist Academy opened in 1977 as the newly consolidated school located north of Bismarck, ND.

Plainview Academy[edit]

Elk Point Industrial School opened in 1902 and was renamed Plainview Academy (PVA) in 1911. Located in Elk Point, SD.

Sheyenne River Academy[edit]

Harvey Industrial School opened in 1904 and was later renamed Sheyenne River Academy (SRA). Located in Harvey, ND

Dakota Adventist Academy[edit]

Dakota Adventist Academy was formed by the consolidation of PVA and SRA to form a new, larger school in Bismarck, ND. It opened in 1977.

Mission Statement[edit]

Dakota Adventist Academy cultivates a Seventh-day Adventist, Christ-centered life by providing academic and vocational education preparing young people for commitment to God, service to society, and citizenship in heaven.

Academic Program[edit]

Dakota Adventist Academy students experience small class sizes and unique learning opportunities. Along with the traditional reading, writing and arithmetic, DAA also offers comprehensive religion classes, computer courses, vocational classes, challenging art and music classes, and independent study options. DAA works with many colleges and universities to make dual-credit and college credit courses an option for students. Students can choose to participate in the national Poetry Out Loud program, opt to join the DAA chapter of the National Honor Society, tour with the select groups, complete dissections and gene experiments in science, build a tiny house in the Construction program, and visit local historical sites and museums. Not all students follow the same path to success, so three diplomas are available for students to pursue: general diploma, vocational diploma, and advanced diploma.

Vocational Program[edit]

DAA's automotive technology and construction vocational classes prepare students for careers in construction or auto repair. While some other private schools are phasing out vocational classes, DAA continues to offer skills and lessons students will use for the rest of their lives, whether or not they pursue careers in the trades. Construction courses include introductions to basic building materials and methods, the proper use of tools, and the construction of a tiny house. Students can even take part in the annual SkillsUSA conference each spring. Automotive Technology students learn how to care for and repair vehicles, and students who complete the Automotive Technology program can take the high school ASE Certification test. Most recently, the construction class Tiny House project was featured in the Bismarck-Mandan Parade of Homes [3]

Community Service[edit]

DAA’s program emphasizes service to the community; they maintain a 10-mile stretch of Highway 1804 as part of the Adopt-a-Highway program and assist every year with various local service opportunities like packing meals for area kids, working with United Way and other local organizations, writing inspirational messages in chalk at the local park, and more. Students also take part in various mission trips. DAA students log more than 20 hours of community service every year.

Religious Association[edit]

Dakota Adventist Academy is a Seventh-day Adventist Christian school, and offers religious education and spiritual programs. However, DAA welcomes students from all backgrounds. Christ-centered activities like spiritual retreats, weeks of spiritual emphasis, daily worship opportunities, community service days, participation in church services and religious programming, student and staff-led prayer groups, sacred music and drama performances at local churches, and more help students become active participants in their own spiritual lives and their communities.
