DANCE COSTUME DESIGNERS[edit]

A dance costumer designer is a person who design and creates the clothing worn by dancers in performances. Their job includes:

  • Conversing with the director to understand the intent of a piece
  • Drawing and designing each article of clothing
  • Choosing fabric and materials, based on color, durability, stretch, etc.
  • Constructing the clothing
  • Tailoring the costume to each dancer

A costumer specializing in dance is different from other costumers because they must be sure their costumes are easy to move in and are durable enough to be stretched and sweated in multiple times.

NOTABLE COSTUME DESIGNERS[edit]

  • Halston
  • Paul Poiret
  • Yumiko Takeshima
  • George Balanchine

Halston became famous as an American fashion designer known for his clean cut style

Paul Poiret was a famous French designer and the founder of the Haute Couture house.

Yumiko Takeshima is not only a successful designer, but also a former principal dancer with Semperoper Ballett, Universal Ballet, the Alberta Ballet Company, Feld Ballet, and the Dutch National Ballet.

George Balanchine gained notoriety as a choreographer before he became a designer.

DESIGNERS' WORK IN ACTION[edit]

Below is a video of Takeshima's costumes used in a production of Tristan and Isolde

The design for both dancers is simple, but flawless. We can see her Princess character being shown in her flowing garments, while his are more plain and form fitting. This helps to tell the story.

Costumes help us to see who a character is and what their situation is. In dance, the performers do not get lines to help get across their character. This is why costumer designers who specialize in dance are so important.
