Daniel Ariano-Sánchez is a tropical ecologist and conservation biologist born in Guatemala City, Guatemala. His research is focused on the effects of climate change, habitat destruction, and overexploitation on the resilience of endangered species, ecosystems, and environmental services provided by them, with a special interest in the use of amphibians and reptiles as model species.[1] He is the world's leading authority on the ecology of the Guatemalan Beaded Lizard, Heloderma charlesbogerti, an endemic species to the dry forest of eastern Guatemala.[2] He has described two vertebrate species new to science, Rhadinella xerophila, a snake species endemic to the seasonally dry tropical forests of Motagua Valley in Guatemala,[3] and Bolitoglossa qeqom, a salamander endemic to the cloud forest of San Cristobal Verapaz, Guatemala.[4]

He was awarded 2008 Young Scientist of the Year by The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS).[5]
