The Darwin Tree of Life project ultimately aims to sequence the whole genomes of the c. 70,000 known eukaryote species in the UK[1][2]. The project is a collaboration with Wellcome Sanger Institute, University of Oxford, Natural History Museum, London, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, University of Cambridge, The Marine Biological Association of the UK, Earlham Institute, University of Edinburgh, and European Bioinformatics Institute. The project forms the UK part of the Earth BioGenome Project[3]. All the genomes are to be published open access. As proof of concept, genomes of 25 iconoic British species were published in 2018[4]. For the first phase of the project, the Wellcome Trust has provided £9 million to sequence the first 2,000 species[5]
