David Duffy (born 25 April 1984) is an Irish musician, composer and record producer based between Barcelona and Cork, Ireland . As a composer he is known for combining classical and electronic music and for his integration of audio visual elements into his work. Most notably he has composed predominantly with his company Eat My Noise, and since 2017 has been releasing music as a solo artist under his own name.
As well as his composition work, Duffy has performed and recorded as a bass player for notable performers as The Hard Ground, The Niall McCabe Band, Jack O Rourke, Declan O Rourke, Mary Black
Biography[edit]
Duffy began studying Double Bass at the age of 14. Performing in local groups, ensembles and orchestras. In 2002 he was accepted to study music at University College Cork, receiving education from notable lectures such as Mel Mercier. Following that in 2006 he was chosen as one of 6 to complete a masters in composition under the guidance of John Godfrey of Crash Ensemble and Icebreaker. Since then David has worked actively as a composer and musician
Composition[edit]
David began composing from the age of 18, surrounded by midi keyboards and Fruity loops, he quickly became quick and began producing his own music. Once in UCC David developed his skills more, and began combining electronic music with acoustic instruments.
Eat My Noise[edit]
Once David completed college he formed Eat My Noise with fellow composer Peter Power. There first set of compositions "Symestesia" and b[r]ass were performed at the Solstice as part of Cork Midsummer festival. The following year they went onto to be one of the music headlines at the 2012 Cork Midsummer Festival with their show "A:volution" [1] [2] for Orchestra, Choir and Electronics. working with video artist Sara Wentworth, they began to create an integrated audiovisual experience that focused on form and content based on infinite cycles such as parabolic spiral, Fermat's spiral and Penrose stairs
2013 saw them bring their second show to Cork Midsummer Festival "Moiety". The work for pitched and unhitched percussion was performed by one of Ireland's leading percussionist Alex Petcu[3] and Slovakian drummer Tomas Gall The show sold out four nights of the festival and received much critical acclaim with Niamh Hegarty of 2xfm naming "Gig of the year so far". The show was later brought to Fierce Festival Birmingham in September of the same year, where it was said "Eat My Noise feed our primal need for rhythms and patterns allowing us to come to an acceptance of what Parks was trying to tell us: repetition is inevitable" [4]
2014 saw them receive an Arts Council of Ireland project award to create their next show "Inquyre" for prerecorded choir in 16 speakers and live choir as part of the Cork Film Festival deemed "incredible... a show for all the senses"[5]
Following "Inquyre" came a collaboration and co production with renowned Cork Theatre company Corcadorca Theatre Company for the show "How these desperate men talk" buy Enda Walsh. The premiere staging of the show in Ireland, it was held in Graples Metal factory and headlined the Kinsale Arts Festival, receiving 4 star reviews by both [The Irish times] and [The Irish Examiner] regarded as "Well worth the effort.. an imaginative production"[6] [7] 2015 also saw them compose the score for Helga Deasy's "Longing Belonging" [8]
2016 saw another collaboration with Corcadorca in the form of "Gentrification", which was held in the Old Cork City Bank. [Pat Kieran] later went on to receive an Irish Times Theatre award nomination for best director, with show again receiving 4 and five star reviews from national papers, described as "deeply disturbing and well executed"[9] [10]
In 2017 they presented their show fLux as the headline music piece for the 60th celebration of the Cork Midsummer Festival[11]
In 2017 David also created a woman dance show with his wife, Internationally renowned Jazz dancer, Ksenia Parkhatskaya called "Radio Hermitage" The show premiered in the Firkin Crane in October [12]
In 2018 his score for "Riuchi: Dreams of light" [13] was described by the Irish examiner as a "superb soundtrack" [14]
Bass player[edit]
David began studying electric bass at age 12 and later moved onto Double Bass at 14. He studied upright bass, and Jazz performance at University College Cork.[15] Here he performed with names such as Gerard Presencer and Richard Buckley[16], and studied with bassist Dave Whittla.
Following university he spent the following two years creating and writing with his group Raftus later changing there name to 19th Light. Throughout this period he sessions on albums of some of his college friends, Michael and Eoin O Suillebhain akasize2shoes performing alongside of Noel Eccles. Following this he became a founding member of the group The Hard Ground, [17] whose critically acclaimed debut album Broken Conversations received RTE one radio success named as Album of the week [18] with Duffy contributing string arrangements and production to the album. Their second album "Triptych" receiving further media acclaim [19] [20] Later the same year Duffy joined The Niall McCabe Band, [21]The Niall McCabe Band [22] Released their debut Album "Part of the Light", also receiving Radio One Album of the week[23], and extensive Irish Radio play.
Throughout 2015 and 2016 he recorded on Jack O Rourke's highly acclaimed debut album "Dreamcatcher". [24]
