Dawlish Sands Holiday Park

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Dawlish Sands Holiday Park is owned and operated by the company Park Holidays UK. It takes its name from the sandy dunes of Dawlish Warren beach a short walk away. The village sits between the estuaries of the Exe and Teign rivers, with the ever shifting sand spit of the Warren forming a fascinating backdrop – home to many migrating birds as well as a golf course.

Nowadays the village is a renowned visitor attraction, but it only sprung to life in the late 19th century when the Great Western Railway brought tourism to this picturesque corner of south Devon. The railway station opened in 1905, and it continues to be a very popular way to arrive, with visitor numbers more than doubling over the last decade. The resort has expanded to its current size over many years and offers a range of traditional seaside facilities that make it one of Devon’s most popular destinations.

The neighbouring town of Dawlish can trace its history back to the 11th century, and also grew as a holiday destination when the railway line came to town and it retains a quaint Victorian elegance.

Devon life is generally quiet and doesn’t make the news headlines too often. As local historian David Force puts it ‘To sum up, the history of Dawlish has been notable for its lack of exciting happenings. No famous people have been born here, no notorious murders taken place or cataclysmic events made national headlines. It still retains an air of genteel refinement’.

Dawlish Sands was developed in the 1960s, and became part of Park Holidays UK in 2006 when (along with Waterside Holiday Park nearby) the company expanded west from its traditional south east roots.

The company has invested heavily in the park in the following years, replacing and upgrading most of the accommodation, and facilities. The park currently has an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, a clubhouse, an adventure playground and an amusement arcade.
