Death and Taxes is a simulation video game project authored by Leene Künnap, an Estonian indie game developer. The game is being developed and published through their company, Placeholder Gameworks. A demo of the game was released for Microsoft Windows, Linux and OS X on August 30, 2019. The game is set for full release in February 2020. [1] The game shares its ideology with the Death-Positive movement.
Gameplay[edit]
The gameplay of Death and Taxes focuses on the work life of a Grim Reaper on an office job. The main objective of the player is to make difficult decisions to determine who could be saved from death and who is destined for certain doom, while keeping the game's fictional world in balance. The game exhibits gameplay known as Papers-like [2] or Tinder-like [3], where the player is faced with constant binary choices which affect the game state. The game attempts to help people relate more easily to themes of death, to see them in a new perspective and to offer the player a chance for self-reflection. The final outcome of the game depends on the player's decisions.

A thesis[4] was written about the game's development at Pallas Univesity of Applied Sciences. The practical part of the thesis consisted of producing a demo of the game, while the written part described its design process and the ethical questions the game attempts to raise. The thesis goes on to examine the problems and solutions of creating a story-based interactive game with a small team. [5]
In September 2019, the YouTuber GrayStillPlays made a video of the game's demo, which gained over 700 000 views in its first month after airing.[6]
