Deep6 had its world premiere at 26th Busan International Film Festival under the 'A Window on Asian Cinema' section on 7 October 2021.[4][5] It was also screened in 'Indian Cinema Now' section at 26th International Film Festival of Kerala held from 18 to 25 March 2022[6] and in 'Innovation in Moving Images' segment at 27th Kolkata international Film Festival.[7]

Interview[edit]

In May 2022 an exclusive interview "Interview: The Political World of a Solitary Woman- Madhuja Mukherjee" with popular film scholar and film critic Shoma A. Chatterji, Mukherjee reveals that the film named as Deep6 because Deep Six is typically a measurement used to measure the depth of the seas into which the coffins of dead sailors flung. It signifies something that’s possibly a secret, unaddressed, hidden, also it would metaphorically mean memory, unconscious and so on. She also added that her personal and collective quandaries, wants, and misery inspired her to create this film. Mukherjee states, "for Deep6 I thought the story needed to be narrated via an audio- visual medium — the interior space and the city for instance, and the play between realism and ‘unreal’ etc., needed to be filmed. Hence, as I kept thinking of Mitul’s world it kept growing into a film and not into a graphic story or a novel or an academic paper for that matter! On the surface, I wanted to keep things bare, almost as though it’s a love story that has gone wrong, then gradually things branch out into other problems and subjects. So, in a way it follows a natural course — like a river or a tree — and then branches out in different directions. I personally thought of the Indian classical musical structure (because I used to play the sitar) in which there are repetitions and variations." Adding more to it, Mukherjee reveals that it took her five years to complete the film starting from concept to censor certificate. She also adds, "It has been a difficult process because I am an outsider to this industry. Initially I tried to share my ideas with friends — including Shoojit and Tillotama — and that is how the film developed. The shooting process was also very difficult because the crew principally came from the ‘industry’ and their and my work ethic and experiences were poles apart! To do production design, art, costume — which means to buy / bring & coordinate stuff, physically at the location — was laborious to say the least! Also, while Avik is my partner, he is a senior cinematographer, and it was incredibly tough to collaborate with a senior cinematographer as a “first time” director. There are many more things to share as a 'first time' 'female' director".[8]

Reception[edit]

  • In 'CALCUTTA HAS LOST HER GRAFFITI' Amrit Gangar an Indian film scholar and critic remarks on the graffiti seen in Deep6 succumbing to ‘emojis’ and the yellow Ambassador taxi gasping its last breath on junk-bed, the young working woman has her own inner emotional and existential struggles to grapple with. He adds, "the rickshaw-puller, the way the film is ‘deep6’ captures and evokes a memory of one of Bikas Bhattacharjee’s paintings. Madhuja Mukherjee’s film has several references and resonances to painting".
  • Deep6 screened at 27th KIFF offers a distinct perspective on life and death is directed by debut filmmaker Madhuja Mukherjee also a prize-winning author, a known researcher and Professor of Film Studies at Jadavpur University, Kolkata. Shoma Chatterji,an Indian film critic appreciated the opening frame of the film. She treasures the film's strength is for its technical brilliance. Chatterji claims that she feels distressed because of the inordinate length of the film funded by significant names like Shoojit Sircar, Ronnie Lahiri, Avik Mukhopadhayay, Harcharan Singh. Adding more to the film, Chatterji talks about Mukherjee "she chooses a linear story but blends it with magic realism, surrealistic touches and the confrontation between Life and Death as experienced by her sole protagonist, Mithul (Tilottama Shome)."[9]
  • In 'Into the depths of her survival' by journalist Rupeshree IV reviews that the film is about a financially independent woman's choices, decisions and struggles have a burning heat that no one can beat. She states, 'the film begins with the death of Mithul's grandmother, a journalist in her thirties, and proceeds to tell the story of modern India. Although the two-and-a-half-hour film primarily depicts Mithul's daily life, her mind. Tilothama Shome's portrayal of Mithul demonstrates her acting prowess once more. Madhuja Mukherjee, a journalist, shared her personal experience. Avik Mukhopadhyay's camera captures the vibrancy of the city bustle as well as the stillness of the solitary home. Soumitra Chatterjee, the late famous Bengali director and actor, also makes a cameo appearance in the film".[10]
  • "HIFF 2022: Don’t miss these 8 Indian films at Habitat International Film Festival, which returns to Delhi after a hiatus of two years", by Tanushree Ghosh, a principal correspondent of the The Indian Express asserts that "Deep6 delves deep into the personal and political world of a young solitary woman (Tillotama Shome) as she strides through multiple lives, blurring the lines between the past, present, and future and encounters many ghosts — the living, the dead, and the undead — against the backdrop of 2011, when the Left parties were voted out of power and from people's hearts after decades of their run in the city. Who exactly is she? Was she fated to do this? How will she break free from the cycles that have trapped her due to her choices, her situation, and forces beyond her control? Is she capable of breaking free from herself?"[11]
  • In "Deep6 trailer: A deeply psychological drama", Roushni Sarkar expresses the semantic collage of visuals captured by Avik Mukhopadhyay and bereft of dialogue thoughtfully woven together by the director speaks volumes. Adding more, she reveals about the interesting effect produced by the combination of light and shadow reflects the various shades of her character. She feels and Prabuddha Banerjee's background score has lent a haunting feel and the composition suggests that the film is deeply psychological in nature.[12]
