From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Department of Instrumentation, CUSAT is a department of the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT). originally the University Science Instrumentation Centre (USIC) has its origin in 1978 as a service department with the support of the University Grants Commission. It has been extending instrumentation support to science and technology departments of the university.

Type Government
Established 1994
Head Dr. K. N. Madhooshudanan
Location Kochi, Kerala, India
Website http://din.cusat.ac.in/

The center was elevated to a level III USIC by UGC in 1990. With this the centre became a fully–fledged academic department. The department started a post graduate diploma course in instrumentation in 1994. In 1995 the university re organized USIC into a full-fledged teaching department with USIC contained in it and the department came into existence in its present form.

The department has a very active research programme in the area of instrumentation and applied physics. The department has implemented a number of research projects funded by DST, DAE, UGC, AICTE, KSCSTE, etc. It has been a venue for a number of national symposia. The department has published a number of research papers pertaining to instrumentation and allied areas.

Departmental Activities

Department of Instrumentation is organizing various programmes like

  1. National seminar on Advances in Scientific and Industrial Instrumentation (ASCII), with the support from UGC, New Delhi
  2. Erudite Programme (Scholar in Residence) with the financial support from Govt. of Kerala
  3. Celebrating Kalam. A competition for school students called “Celebrating Kalam” in memory of our former President.

Academic Activities[edit]

Department arranges Industrial visits and training for the student community to help them to identify the different job profiles and to get a closer at the working of an industry. The various industries include NTPC Kayamkulam, FACT Kochi, FCRI Palakkad etc.

Student Activities[edit]

The department  is organizing  various activities like Fresher’s Day, Onam Fest and Games, INFO Sports, INFO Literary events, Teacher’s Day Celebration, Debates, Personality Development Programmes, Group Discussions, Cleanliness and Tree Planting Drive, Alumni meet, New Year celebration etc.

In addition to the above activities, our students are actively participating in CUSAT Youth Festival as well as in CUSAT Sports.

Research Labs

CVD system for Graphene Deposition[edit]

It is a  low pressure CVD system fabricated in our research lab especially for synthesis of graphene films.

Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is a chemical process used to produce high quality, high-performance, solid materials. The process is often used in the semiconductor industry to produce thin films. In typical CVD, the wafer (substrate) is exposed to one or more volatile precursors, which react and/or decompose on the substrate surface to produce the desired deposit. Frequently, volatile by-products are also produced, which are removed by gas flow through the reaction chamber.

Atomic Layer Deposition System[edit]

This ALD System is  fabricated in our research lab

ALD is a CVD-derived thin film deposition technique that appears to be the most promising technique for the deposition of ultrathin films of high-k materials for future microelectronics applications. ALD is based on the application of sequential, self-limiting surface reactions. ALD may be considered as a type of CVD where the gas phase precursors are introduced alternately instead of simultaneously.

Gas Sensor Set up[edit]

This photograph deals with the gas sensing measurement facility that have fabricated .

We  have employed the static method where gas concentration was determined by volume ratio. With the help of the temperature controller the sensor is brought to the desired temperature. Once the temperature is reached the desired concentration of gas is taken from calibrated cylinder and injected into the test chamber. The variation of sensor resistance in the presence of test gas is monitored using keithley 195A digital multimeter .All the measurements are carried out at atmospheric pressure.

Seminar Hall

The seminar hall has a capacity of 100 students and is equipped with high speed networking equipment, adequate teaching and learning aids like LCD projectors, Wireless PA systems, Multimedia computer and many more to provide students with the best of learning environment and methodology.

Seminar Hall is utilized by students for their project report presentations, seminars as well as expert lectures, workshops, training programs and interactive sessions.

Laboratories

The laboratories in the department provide ample facilities for scientific research experiments and measurements. The overall aim is to enable students to develop types of skills needed to become a model professional in the field of engineering.

Activities focus on core areas in Instrumentation Engineering, whose contributions are vital for scalable, high performance, dependable and secure computations far into the new century.

The Laboratories available for experimentation in the department include:

  • Distributed Control System Lab
  • Process Control Lab
  • Electronics Circuits Lab
  • Industrial Instrumentation  and Transducer Lab
  • Digital Electronics Lab
  • Microprocessor Lab
  • Control Engineering Lab
  • Mechanical Workshop
  • Programming Lab

Library

Yet another asset of the department is its well-maintained library. The library has a large collection of books, most of them related to Instrumentation. In addition to this, the department is a regular subscriber of many national and international journals like Review of Scientific Instruments,Instrument Society of India etc.The department has a good collection of project reports and research papers.

The students have also access to the central library of the university, which provides them ample scope to read and enlarge their vision.

The central library too has a good collection of books relating to control system automation, computer controlled systems, robotics etc.

The library is fully computerized and also provides high-speed internet facilities.

Hostels

The Department of Instrumentation has rooms available for its students in all the university hostels. There are messes for each hostel, located inside its own vicinity. Hostels provide a cot, study table, chair and a cupboard for each student. Every hostel has 24 hours electricity and water supply, water coolers, common TV room, reading rooms and much more.

Placement Cell

The department of Instrumentation has a vibrant and lively functioning placement cell that strives to find you the right organization. The placement cell carries out counseling and training to ensure students are mentally and emotionally prepared to face the interview board. Interactive talks with experts are also held along with this. Besides, the cell maintains a healthy relationship with our alumni and other top officials to enhance the scope of employment.

Summer Internship[edit]

Summer Internships are an integral part of the curriculum and forms a vital aspect of the overall development of their students. It allows students to experience and learn corporate culture and at the same time the corporate world gets a fair idea about the talent of the emerging generation of the future engineers of the Department Of Instrumentation, CUSAT. It also acts as a mechanism to help students to crystallize their carrier choices as they explore themselves in their project work. It will provide students the opportunity to develop attitude conducive to effective interpersonal relationships. It will also test their adaptability attribute and aid them in adjusting from college to full time employment.
