Departure is an American science fiction film project in development as of 2019, based on the novel “Ghosts of the Air” by Martin Caidin.
A brilliant Miami-based FAA investigator is obsessed with learning how a 727 suddenly vanished into thin air and then reappeared in the exact same spot ten minutes later. As mysterious occurrences continue to occur with increasing frequency in the skies over Miami, the investigation becomes personal when the employee’s beloved wife is on one of the affected planes.
On May 15, 2013, Lionsgate Films and Summit Entertainment will produce Billy Ray’s sci-fi romance script “Departure,” with Ray set to direct Good Universe’s Joe Drake and Nathan Kahane is executive producing the film. On August 27, 2014, David Frankel was set to direct “Departure,” with Ray set to produce along with Drake, Kahane, Jim Whitaker, Roy Lee and John Powers Middleton. On August 9, 2017, Chad Hartigan was set to replace Frankel. On May 1, 2019, Babak Anvari was set to replace Hartigan as director as well as co-write a new draft with Ray, and Good Universe is no longer involved with the movie. As of June 2020, there have been no further developments since.
