Derek Szanto (born 17 August 1994) is an American/British professional soccer player who plays as a defender for Accrington Stanley FC.
Career[edit]
Accrington Stanley FC
In August 2016, Szanto signed with Accrington Stanley FC in England’s 4th Division. Szanto was loaned out for the remainder of the season to Burscough FC making several appearances for the Linnets in the 2016/17 season. As well as scoring in the FA Cup 1st round versus AFC Emley. Throughout the 2016/17 season Szanto would spend time with Macclesfield Town FC where he made appearances in friendlies, but make no competitive debut.
Portland Timbers FC
In January 2016, Szanto signed with the Portland Timbers 2 of the United States Soccer League. Szanto helped the team to a 12-14-4 record narrowly missing out on the 2016 United States Soccer League Western Conference Playoffs.
Kitsap Pumas FC
In January 2014, Szanto signed his first professional contract with United States Soccer League side Kitsap Pumas, helping the team to a league title, and getting to the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup 2nd Round. After being scouted by Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente Szanto spent time on trial in Tijuanna, Mexico. However it did not yield a first team contract. He would make several appearances in friendly games, but failed to make a competitive debut. Szanto initially began preseason with United States Soccer League side Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC but re-signed with the Kitsap Pumas club for the 2015 season. In 2015, Szanto helped Kitsap Pumas reach the 4th round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup beating Sacramento Republic FC in 3rd round 3-1, eventually losing 2-0 to Seattle Sounders FC.
Youth[edit]
West Coast FC
Captain of West Coast FC team under head coach Oliver Wyss that won 2 US Youth Soccer National Championships, Region IV Championships,US Youth Soccer National League, Region IV league, and Surf Cup. Szanto was also invited to be on the Cal South Olympic Development Team 94' that won 2 back to back Regional Championships and a National Championship. Szanto was selected to be a part of the Region IV Olympic Development Team and U17 USYNT team pool.
College
On December 22, 2011, committed to UC Irvine men's soccer. In August 2012 attended and captained SDSMT men's soccer. On August 1, 2013 transferred to Oregon State University men's soccer.
