From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Derrick Belcham (born July 7 1980) is a Canadian independent filmmaker. Since moving to the United States in 2012, he is based in Brooklyn, New York. His most known work as a director includes music videos for Julianna Barwick[1], My Brightest Diamond, Trixie Whitley, Tor Miller, DIIV, The Antlers, Arcade Fire's Sarah Neufeld[2], as well as his documentary filmmaking with subjects such as Phillip Glass, Steve Reich, Laurie Anderson and Wilco. Beginning in 2010 he directed over 75 episodes[3] of La Blogothéque's "A Take Away Show" originally created by filmmaker Vincent Moon and produced by La Blogotheque founder Chryde (born Christophe Abric). Belcham has collaborated with hundreds of artists in dance, theater and architecture through his own production company, A Story Told Well.

Derrick Belcham has created works and lectured at such institutions as MoMA PS1 (New York), MoCA (New York), The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, The Whitney Museum Of American Art, Musee D'Art Contemporain (Montreal), The Philip Johnson Glass House (Connecticut), Brooklyn Academy of Music (Brooklyn, New York) and The Contemporary Arts Center of Cincinnati. His films have been featured in The New York Times, Vogue, Pitchfork, NPR and Rolling Stone are screened at short, dance and experimental festivals and retrospectives around the world. In 2013, he was awarded a grant from The Graham Foundation[4] for Jordan Stein, Irene Allen and his own work on Night, which encompassed six original films surrounding a performance series at The Phillip Johnson Glass House inspired by Alberto Giacometti's missing sculpture.

Take Away Shows[edit]

Vincent Moon's "Take Away Shows" were first created in 2006 to change the format of the music video to better illustrate the music and capture an intimate moment with the musician. Belcham first got involved in the direction of La Blogothéque's "Take Away Shows" after meeting Nora Bouazzouni, a producer for the company. Since 2010, Belcham's numerous Take Away Show episodes have featured Spoon, Perfume Genius, AC Newman, Neko Case, Sharon Von Etten, Courtney Barnett, Titus Andronicus, Colin Stetson, Diane Cluck, Porcelain Raft, Spinto Band, Horse Feathers, Callers, Echo and The Bunnymen and Houndmouth amongst many others.

Pressur.es[edit]

In 2013, alongside artist Ruby Kato Atwood, Derrick Belcham co-founded Pressur.es, a multidisciplinary arts organization to create films incorporating choreography, sound and editing. The debut film[5] produced by Pressur.es was the 2013 music video for Sarah Neufeld's track, "Forcelessness." Choreographers for Pressur.es films include Emery LeCrone, Lily Ockwell, Leslie Kraus, Emily Terndrup, Chloe Kernaghan, Meghan Frederick, Haylee Nichele, Mariel Lugosch-Ecker, Melanie Maar, Beth Gill, Chelsea Bonosky and Mary Cavett. Featured musicians for the series include My Brightest Diamond, Marissa Nadler, Tim Fain, Skye Skjelset, Colin Stetson, Julianna Barwick, White Hinterland, Pietro Amato, Porcelain Raft, Pedro Soler, Philippe Mouratoglou and Hannah Epperson amongst others.

Dance Theater[edit]

In 2014, Belcham collaborated with choreographer Emily Terndrup to write and direct several experiential dance theater productions at large warehouse space, The Knockdown Center in Maspeth, NY. "The Wilder Papers" [6](June 4, 2014) was a one-night only live performance weaving dance, five live musicians and experiential narrative surrounding the lives of composer Julian Wilder and choreographer, Dorienne Lee. In "Debut"[7] (October 7, 2014), Belcham and Terndrup continued the idea of shifting proscenium and live music, this time adding large scale art installation to enact a story of teenagers breaking into an abandoned building on the night of their prom. In 2015 the duo returned once more for "Fable" (October 8, 2015) which featured live dance performance, live music, and a 360 degree sound-reactive enclosure and light installation.
