From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Desh Apnayen Sahayog Foundation is a movement that aims to build an accountable citizenry and society around three important themes: citizenship education, volunteerism and neighbourhood. Founded by Vallabh Bhanshali, this not-for-profit social impact and community development initiative inspires and educates young citizens to be conscious and active by running long term and short term programmes at leading schools and colleges. We encourage learning about democracy, by doing it and promoting it in action at the school, college, corporate and individual levels. The core idea of Desh Apnayen’s initiatives is to foster a love for the nation amongst the youth by reigniting a sense of pride and patriotism in them. Based on the principles of democracy such as accountability, inclusiveness and unity, we envision a fairer, safer, participative and cohesive society. Through their work, they wish to build a citizenry with strong values, strength of character and leadership abilities. Desh Apnayen’s projects are focused on promoting citizenship education and civic participation at schools and college levels. These projects contribute to shaping individuals as well as institutions. Some of their other projects include programmes that focus on Vipassana meditation (non – sectarian ), spirituality, mentoring of youth and leadership training.[1][2]

REDEFINING CITIZENSHIP[edit]

The need to redefine civics education
The Foundation started an exploration with one question – what makes a good democracy, and what sustains it? The answer was Citizens. There is no more important task in front of them today than building an informed, effective and responsible citizenry. They believe that today, right now, is the time for them to build mindsets that identify first with India and mould young minds into clear thinking and enlightening participants for the country’s progress.

A long period of research, talking to experts and examination of six decades of governance has led them to this calling of citizenship education.

COLLEGE PROGRAMMES[edit]

Youth leadership and skill development
India is now the youngest country in the world, and the foundation wants to tap the potential of the college going youth and instil in them a sense of oneness and service for the country. To make democracy come alive again is the purpose behind their college level programmes. These programmes are centred on the themes of volunteering for good, inspiring accountability, working up from the grass roots and inclusiveness.

In the past couple of years, Desh Apnayen Sahayog Foundation has conducted a college programme in association with The Blue Ribbon Movement, the NSS Cell of Mumbai University, Praja and Bombay First.

The social aim of the college program was to have fellows engage in creating awareness about dialing 1916, which connects to the central complaint registration system (CCRS) of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) in order to improve infrastructural and sanitation issues around the city.

Desh Apnayen Sahayog Foundation will launch its new college program for college students promoting youth leadership and skill development shortly.
