Dirtbag Jesus is a climbing and outdoor culture website founded by Brooks Ryan and John Oberbeck in 2016.

Founding[edit]

Dirtbag Jesus is the most successful of founders Brooks and John's many attempts to launch a website and their first attempting to cover climbing and outdoor topics. The name Dirtbag Jesus originated from Brooks and John's laments at the unattainable idea of the "Dirtbag" that many climbers aspire to.[1] The idea of a "Dirtbag Jesus" represents that unattainable and largely farcical idea that many climbers genuinely aspire to.[2]

Content[edit]

The content on Dirtbag Jesus is focused on providing information to climbers and outdoor enthusiasts about routes in trip reports (beta) and giving commentary on the general goings-on of the climbing community and climbing culture.

Founders Brooks and John provide the majority of the content for the site but several articles are written by their close friends and climbing acquaintances such as. One notable example is an article written by Brooks's sister, Kathryn Ryan, about her first experience with traditional climbing.[3] Public submissions are encouraged and published also.
