Dodd-Walls Centre for Photonic and Quantum Technologies

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Dodd-Walls Centre for Photonic and Quantum Technologies (DWC) is a national Center of Research Excellence (CoRE) involving six universities in New Zealand and partner institutions in the USA, United Kingdom, and Singapore. The Center does fundamental research on the quantum nature of matter, the physics and optics of light and the manipulation of individual photons. New knowledge and applications are commercialized for use in the economy and across a variety of industries including the agritech, medical devices, and civil engineering industries.

The Center is named after Professors Jack Dodd (Ph.D. Birmingham, UK, 1952, nuclear physics) and Dan Walls (Ph.D. Harvard, USA, 1969, quantum optics).[1] Both men were mentored by Nobel Prize winners, Roy Glauber (2005 Nobel Prize in physics[2]) in the case of Dan Walls and Willis Lamb (1955 Nobel Prize in physics[3]) in the case of Jack Dodd, and they become highly influential in the development and growth of quantum optics, photonics and ultra-cold atoms, and physics in general, in New Zealand.

The Center was established in 2006 by the amalgamation of the antecedent Jack Dodd Centre for Quantum Technology[4] at the University of Otago and the Dan Walls Centre for Pure and Applied Optics at the University of Auckland.[5] The Dodd-Walls Center secured major funding from New Zealand's Tertiary Education Commission in 2015 and become a national center of research excellence.[6]

The Center has over 220 researchers and students working within four thematic areas:

  • Photonic sensors and imaging
  • Photonic sources and components
  • Quantum fluids and gases
  • Quantum manipulation and information

List of Directors[edit]

The following is a list of the Directors of the Dodd-Walls Center:

Directors of the Dodd-Walls Center
Name Term Notes
Crispin Gardiner 2006–2014 Director
David Hutchinson[7] 2014–present Director
Neil Broderick[8] 2014–present Deputy Director

Education outreach and IP commercialization[edit]

The Dodd-Walls Centre actively engages with domestic and international businesses, hosting networking and showcasing events[9][10], performing contract research and consultancy, and commercializing new IP.[11] The Centre promotes science literacy through education outreach at schools, museums and other public places. Recent outreach activities have included hands-on experiences with school children and parents at the remote Chatham Islands,[12] talks and demonstrations at high schools[13] and interactive workshops blending physics and theater arts.[14]

Awards and Recognition[edit]

  • Professor Ursula Keller, ETH Zurich and Dodd-Walls Centre Science Advisory Board Member (2015–2017), Winner of the European Inventor Award 2018[15]
  • Dr Frédérique Vanholsbeeck, University of Auckland and Dodd-Walls Centre Principal Investigator (2015–present), OSA Diversity and Inclusion Advocacy Recognition Award[16]
  • Mr Ian Taylor, CEO Animation Research Limited (NZ) and Dodd-Walls Centre Governance Board Member (2017–2018), Outstanding Contribution to Technology and Business in New Zealand[17]
