Dogs of Democracy is a 2016 documentary film directed by the Australian filmmaker M.Zournazi (also known as Mary Zournazi). It follows the stray dogs of Athens during the Greek financial crisis and the anti-austerity protests. M.Zournazi explores the lives of the stray dogs and the people who look after them, raising questions about community, care, and love during times of uncertainty.[1]
Synopsis[edit]
During a trip to Athens, Zournazi noticed the abundance of stray dogs and became fascinated with them and the network of volunteers who care for the dogs[2]. During the anti-austerity protests, stray dogs or riot dogs became a symbol of hope for Greek citizens. Dogs, like Loukanikos, who appears in the documentary, became known to protect protestors against police.
The documentary explores the concept of philoxenia, the Greek philosophy on expressing love and friendship towards a stranger. Although the Greek people experience financial hardship and difficulty, there are people willing to care and provide for the most vulnerable - both human and animal.
During the film, Zournazi travels to the island of Lesvos during the European Migrant Crisis as it unfolded in Greece[3]. Through the perspective of the stray dogs, we learn about the possibilities of care and caring for the stranger during times of crises.
