Early life and background[edit]

Dr. Smita Naram was born on 26th May 1962, in a family where four generations were Vaidyas (ayurveda practitioners). By the age of 16, she met Pankaj Naram who later became her husband. He played a huge role in influencing Smita for learning Ayurveda, hence she joined Ayurvedic Madhyama and Ayurvedic Uttama course, conducted by Jamnagar University. These courses helped her having proper insight of the subject and connected to Charak Samhita (ancient book of clinical practices of Ayurveda), Ashtanga Hridayam (another ancient book written by Rishi Ashtang on Ayurveda), Bhaavprakash (An ancient book on herbology) in detail and also anatomy and physiology in detail. She later joined Ayurved Bishak which was a two years program conducted by Nikhil Bhartiya Ayurved Mahavidyalaya (All India Ayurvedic University). During 4 years of Ayurveda Education, she realized that even though it is 5000 years old ancient technique, it is yet quite up-to-date in today's time.

During this time, Smita and Dr. Pankaj Naram decided to marry and they got married on 8 June 1983. They wanted to create world class ayurvedic products. For this reason, Smita took a training for 3 years in D. Pharm. There, she studied Pharmacology, Pharmacognosy, Anatomy Physiology in modern way and how to test the herbs for quality pharmaceutical products. By 1986, she completed her pharmacy training and registered herself in the Maharashtra Medical Council, a government organization that permits doctors to practice in India. Then, she started practicing with her husband.

Later, they changed the name to 'Ayushakti Ayurved Pvt. Ltd.'[3] At present, Ayushakti is operating a chain of more than 20 clinics located in India, Europe, North America.

Smita made sure that no heavy metals, chemical contamination were used during manufacturing the medicines and the formulas were made from a high quality potent extracts. By 1987, they had a small factory which was around 1500 sq.ft. where tablets and other medicines were made. She slowly recreated many formulas based on the principles of removing toxins, strengthening metabolism, calming stress level, balancing the immune system and cooling down the heat.[4] She worked for 4 years on different formulas and created more than 150 formulas which were then tested on hundreds of people and finally approved by Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Maharashtra, India. By 1992 all these formulas proved to be very effective. Soon, they realized that they were specializing in fertility, joints, asthma, chronic pain issues, liver issues, diabetes, cholesterol, skin problems like acne, psoriasis etc.[5]
