Lipowa Street is the main, characteristic street located in downtown Białystok, running from Rynek Kościuszki (Kościuszki Market Square) to Plac Niepodległości im. Romana Dmowskiego (Independence Square in the name of Roman Dmowski). Lipowa, a cobblestone street, is about 790m long.

Name

The street's name is derived from Lipa, the Polish word for [[Tilia], because a lime espalier was grown in the area between the 18th and 20th century. In the past, the street had other names: Choroszcz, Nowolipie, Lipowa, Józef Piłsudski, Joseph Stalin, Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin (again), and finally, after the second world war, the street's original name was restored–Lipowa Street.

History

During the second world war, the street was named after Józef Piłsudski, Joseph Stalin, Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin (again), and finally the named was restored to Lipowa. In 1944, the street was almost completely destroyed by the Nazis.
