Arturo “Durothethird” Parada (born 1976) is a Toronto-based graffiti[1] and graphic artist.[2] He has solidified himself as a notable graffiti artist, both in Toronto and internationally.

Life[edit]

His Chilean father and Italian mother were political refugees who fled Chile under the Pinochet regime. Arturo took the arts from a very young age and excelled in visual arts. He began expressing himself using the art of graffiti at the age of 14 while attending Wexford Collegiate School for the Arts[3]. His early work can be found throughout Scarborough and he eventually expanded to different parts of the General Toronto Area (GTA) as well as Ottawa, Montreal, New York and Australia.

Art[edit]

Duro started his graffiti career in 1989 in Scarborough, Ontario[4] and became an internationally renowned graffiti artist in 1995 and is known for his graffiti in Toronto. He has worked with other artists like Seen, How n Nosm, TATS CRU, Loomit, DAIM, Jazi and Abel among many other artists.

Durothethird was instrumental in recognizing the need to take graffiti onto the Internet and pioneered a new form of online graffiti, gaining notoriety later in his career for incorporating technology and social media in the creation of his art [5]. Tools such as Instagram and the iPad revolutionized his artistic vision and allowed him to reach a whole new audience of consumers and creatives [6].

He expanded his work to include mixed media with large scale interactive installations[7][8]

Duro's body of work also includes music (creating, producing and teaching) [9], photography, graphic design and fashion design.
