EWMD - European Women Management Development - is an international nonprofit network established in 1984 by women for women and men in management. Established in Wiesbaden it links professionals from all areas of business, with the aim to improve the quality of management, respecting women and men and the diversity. Today, the network has more than 900 members all over the world, including USA, Asia and South Africa. The network carries forward different initiatives and socially useful studies in management It is actively engaged through meetings, trainings and events, online conferences, newsletter and social media.

History[edit]

EWMD was founded in 1984[1]. The “Founding Mothers” are Gay Haskins and Valerie Hammond from the United Kingdom, Helga Stödter, Ariane Berthoin Antal and Camilla Krebsbach-Gnath from Germany, Federica Olivares and Ambra Poli from Italy, Margit Wallsten from Sweden, and Elisabeth Michel-Alder from Switzerland. It was created with the goal to promote women into management through spreading best practices among different organizations and companies in Europe. The creation of the Network was supported by European Foundation for Management Development in Brussels, especially by its Secretary General Sybren Tijmstra. All together, they recognised that many organizations weren't enhancing the women's skills properly, while the number of young women that enrolled in business schools in Europe, in the 80's, was too small. That is why the birth of the Network was oriented to give visibility and highlight women's skills, their participation in leading positions in different industries while the quality of management should have been higher and diversity supportive. Activities[edit]

The network[2] strongly supports women in different industries through multiple initiatives[3][4] It is also engaged in surveys while lots of them have been published [5][6], initiatives[7], workshops[8]. Different dialogue meetings[9], conference calls online and forums are organized constantly in different European cities[10] The organizating is nurtured by constant both formal and informal networking[11]

Structure and organization[edit]

EWMD has nearly 900 members, both individual and corporate, all over the world. The network has grown constantly since the establishment and now is present in 14 countries, with active members in almost 40 local chapters in Europe (Germany, Italy, Switzerland, France, Sweden, Turkey, Lithuania, Austria, Benelux) including little branches in USA, India, South Africa and Asia.

The coordination and strategy is a International Board's task. The International Board is represented by National Representatives, EWMD Directors and the Management board, while all the positiong are voluntary and not paid. Today, the Presidents of the Network are Nadin Meloth and Selene Ghioni; the Network has an International Treasurer - Brigitte Hunziker, a Communication Director - Alice Palumbo, a Marketing Director - Paola Ligabue, an International Projects Director, Christiane Eckardt and an IT Director, Christina Müller.

The structure is divided in International, National and Regional so-called chapters (not each country has regional chapters)[12]. The membership includes the automatic subscription to the International e.V., the central body; voting rights at the Annual General Meetings. alongside with the possibility to take part of National or Regional events and elections, when provided.

Vision and philosophy[edit]

The purpose of EWMD today is to promote women’s careers in management and further develop the knowledge and skills of female executives on a national and international level. EWMD’s core issues are: Women in leading positions, Life cycle awareness from 30–80, Related best practice spreading. In 2018 the project "Women on Board" was started. EWMD also signed the Nürnberger Resolution in 2010 which aims at having 40% women on boards following the Norwegian law.

Awards and events[edit]

Since 2014, every year EWMD assigns a female leader prize - known as “She made a difference” - rewarding women who stand out for their work. The award can be assigned in all countries where EWMD has a filial. In 2014, to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Network, the award was presented and assigned to Viviane Reding, a Luxembourgish politician and Member of the European Parliament. In 2016 it was given to Gay Haskins, one of the founders of EWMD.
