Eamonn Hobbs

Eamonn Hobbs is a medical executive, entrepreneur and inventor within the fields of Radiology, Oncology and Gastroenterology.[1] [2] [3] [4][5]He is best known as the Co-Founder and past CEO of AngioDynamics, Inc., which he started in 1988 and took public in 2004.[6][7][8] Hobbs is also the former Chairman of the Medical Device Manufacturing Association (MDMA) where he helped to shape industry and FDA legislation.[9][10][11][12] In recognition of his contributions, he was granted an honorary fellowship in the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) in 2005, receiving one of ten Honorary Fellowships granted in the nearly 50-year history of the SIR, and one of only three ever granted to a non-physician.[13][6]

Personal[edit]

Eamonn Hobbs was born June 12, 1958 in Springfield, Massachusetts shortly after his parents immigrated from Dublin, Ireland to the U.S. with his three older brothers.[14] He attended Classical High School in Springfield where he was a standout student and athlete.[15] Upon graduating in 1976, Hobbs accepted an appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy with the goal of joining NASA to become an astronaut.[4][15] After several months at the Academy, Hobbs learned that he had a progressive astigmatism that would disqualify him from being a pilot based on vision requirements.[4][15] With vision restrictions preventing him from becoming an astronaut, he left the Academy in September of 1976 and transferred to Lowell Technical College (now University of Massachusetts Lowell) where he pursued a B.S. degree in Plastics Engineering with a Biomaterials emphasis.[4] [7] Graduating in 1980, he was the winner of “The President’s Medal” for distinguished student performance (Top 1%).[12]

Career[edit]

Hobbs started his career in 1980 at Cook Medical, Inc. in Bloomington, Indiana where he was a Product Development Engineer.[6] In 1983, he returned to the Northeast to start his own company, Hobbs Medical, specializing in trans-endoscopic interventional devices for Gastroenterologists.[16]  He sold the company in 1985 and began working for North American Medical Instruments Corporation (NAMIC) as the Vice President of Marketing and Product Development.[6] In 1994 Pfizer acquired the company for $155 million.[17]

Remaining in the radiology field, Hobbs joined E-Z-EM, Inc. (now Bracco) in 1988 as the Senior Vice President of Business Development.[18] Hobbs identified a growing Interventional Radiology market and created a business plan to spin out a subsidiary of E-Z-EM to develop new products.[19] In 1988 Hobbs executed the plan and co-founded AngioDynamics, Inc. in Queensbury, NY along with E-Z-EM CEO Howard Stern.[20] As CEO, Hobbs grew the business from a wholly-owned, green field start-up to an international stand-alone profitable public company with over 700 employees and revenues in excess of $200 million[21][7]

Hobbs took the company public in 2004[8] and AngioDynamics (NASDAQ: ANGO) was considered one of the best performing medical technology IPOs of the class of 2004.[22] ANGO was recognized in Business Week as a “Hot 100 Top Growth Company” for 2005 and 2006[23] and received a #11 ranking in Forbes “Best 200 Small Companies” in 2006.[24]

In 2009 Hobbs stepped down from AngioDynamics and took over as CEO of Delcath, Inc. (NASDAQ: DCTH)[8], an early-stage cancer therapy company for whom he already served on the Board of Directors. During his 4 year tenure, he took the company from a team of 7 to a fully commercial and manufacturing operation[25] with over 65 employees. In 2014 Hobbs assumed the role of interim CEO for Antares Pharma (NASDAQ: ATRS), a specialty pharmaceutical company that focuses on drug/device combination products.[26] Hobbs had also served on the ATRS Board of Directors starting in 2009 prior to becoming CEO.[27]

He currently serves as a Visiting Scholar and Entrepreneur in Residence for the Translational Accelerator at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School.[16]
