Edi Rainer

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Edi Rainer was a mountaineer who died in the 1936 Eiger North Face climbing disaster. He died as a result of the same avalanche that killed Andreas Hinterstoisser and the severely injured Willy Angerer. The cause of his death was asphyxiation due to the weight of his dead companion on the rope around his diaphragm. According to mountaineer Joe Simpson - in his 2007 book and accompanying documentary "The Beckoning Silence" it would have taken Rainer around ten minutes to die after the avalanche[1]

The only one of Rainer's companions to survive the avalanche was twenty three year old Toni Kurz . When contacted by rescuers, Kurz was forced to cut free both Rainer and Angerer to provide enough rope to attempt rescue. Tragically, the rope was still not long enough and Kurz eventually died of exposure[2]
